Have a friend with a 98 FI ultra.
After a 20 minute ride ,sometimes longer, it will just shut off. All lights and electrical power.
After two or so minutes he can start it back up. Ride 20 minutes or so same thing.
His indie has changed the ignition switch, 50 a main breaker.
At first he was turning the ignition off and waited a few minutes and it would start back up.
The last couple of times he left everything on and power came back by it self in a couple of minutes.
I asked if his indie checked the codes and he said there wasn't any.
I was with him a couple of years earlier when his heat sensor on the front cylinder went.Different symptoms .
He has had his stator changed before this started. But I think some time passed before this started
Any ideas?
Sorry it's so long!
Thanks
Joe
I guess I should have put this in evo section
Went through the bike. Checked all the wiring I could get to.
Dielectric grease on all connectors.
Ajayrk : sensor was melted so he is replacing it. Hope that was it.
Couldn't really confirm cause bike runs well.
Found one chaffed wire in the fairing.
If it still does it with the new sensor he will buy a new main fuse.
Bike had no codes.
It's a 14 year old bike but looks brand new.
His indie has been working on it since new.
Thanks to all
Joe

It's most likely the main breaker, might have gotten a bad replacement.
Listen to the jingle the rumble and the roar.

Or the terminals to the breaker are loose on the wire. Resistance at the joint overheats at the breaker and it shuts down the bike..

Check the battery wires themselves at both ends. Don't just look at them, take them off make sure that there is clean metal at all contact points and tug the hell out of them to make sure the wires are not broken inside the insulation.
The ground wires all need to be taken apart, cleaned and inspected. From the starter mount stud to the battery and all the little 1/4-20 studs.
Next open the fairing up, you can see the 3 big red wires in the plugs coming from the main harness to the ignition switch. Pull the plugs apart and make sure that they are clean.
Be sure and use dielectric grease on each and ever contact you take apart to keep them clean.
EASY
Just ride the damned thing!

Thanks again
I will clean and dielectric grease every connector I come across.
I noticed in the main diagram there is another main relay besides the starter one.
I think I will get the heat gun out and heat up some of those relays. On low of course.
Some freeze spray if I can get it to cut off.

Take a look at the ignition sensor in the nose cone.  It is the cam position sensor and the tip over sensor.  I bet it has melted down.

Battery connections is the first place I would look and physically ensure they are corrosion free and tight.

How is the battery voltage? I had it happen to me one time when I left the switch on and drained the battery down, it started fine so I thought it wasn't drained down too much and would just charge back up while running, after tripping the breaker 3  times I decided to charge the battery and the problem went away. Not sure but a weak battery could possibly cause the same, maybe take it out and charge it up and load test it.

The 1998 Ultra had a recall for the main breaker. I imported one into CAnada a few years back and I had to have evidence that all recalls had been dealt with first. The main breaker (40 Amp I believe) was on the list. Search Harley recalls and you will see it there.

kd,

Read the 1st post again. He already replaced the main breaker with a 50. I'm with Max on this one.

OOPS. I guess I missed that.

What Max said makes sense too. I have however lost 2 head temp sensors (1 each on my 98s). They had varying symtoms and went away for a while too. Niether bike stored the fault code but a sharp tech friend of mine said change it so I did and problem solved.
