Check the primary Chain and gears
If you have to stop and think about if it is right or wrong, Assume it is wrong.

wildrider

you might want to check your rear wheel bearings, if they are worn out they will make the front end feel weird.

Can you give a better description of the rough ride?
Listen to the jingle the rumble and the roar.

get it going, pull in the clutch and hit the kill switch.....that will tell you if the engine is in the equation....

did you ever check critical fasteners per SM?

:agree:

My first guess would be front motor mount has failed although the OP didn't tell us anything about the mileage on the bike.  It will be obvious when he shuts the engine off.  And a quick visual inspection should verify the diagnosis.

Even with the motor not running, the motor will bounce around and cause a bunch of thumping if the front motor mount is shot. My son experienced this on his 2000 Ultra.

I don't dissagree that you still wouldn't feel something, but if its the motor mount, I would think there would be a significant change in the feeling when the engine is shut off.

I had a similar situation happen at 65000....motor mount was perfect BUT the cross member it sits on failed because the factory did not complete the weld (HD customer service acknowledged this)

check the welds at the down tubes...should be back flange, top, and front flange welded to the tubes....one of the pics below show the missing weld at the left down tube

when I spin the rear wheel, I get a squeek, thought it was belt guard but when I removed it squeek was still there

easyricer

Get a look at your bearings and your belt tension. 90% of the newer bikes that I see, the belts are run tight enough to strum a tune on. There should be about 3/4-7/8 of an inch of deflection. If the belt is the squeal then a light spray of belt dressing from any automotive store will shut it up. Get a good look at the bearings, if you see a trail of grease coming from them, it's time to replace them. That can also cause the feeling of riding on a gravel road. If they are that bad, it usually means they are fixing to spit the little ball bearings out and you are going to have a bad day.

Just ride the damned thing!
