I have a 93 FLHTC, with a screaming eagle ignition  and I have been trying to time the ignition. i can't seem to get the mark to line up in the window. I have been trying with the lead from the light on the front cylider, but someone told me I should be on the back cylinder, is that right? I am currently away so I don't have access to my Manual. Does the Screaming Eagle ignition module advance the timing @ idle? I'm sure the manual says to run the engine @ 2000 rpm, is the timing being advanced by the module @ this RPM? The Manual is for stock ignitions, I'm just wondering if I'm missing something here? The previous owner had put the Screaming Eagle Ignition and a cam swap. Any help would be appreciated!!

When timing it is far easier to remove the primary fluid and time through the primary inspec. cover. Remove the timing plug and find the line in the hole. then mark your rotor and primary case to corisponde to those marks. super easy to see.

Agree on that!!  Done 100 times , works a lot better
Mark on TDC and use a CRAFTSMAN Dial Back

I agree HTT does provide beeter info than tose other forums.
So I go off the front cylinder right? And I use the line, not the dot? the Screaming Eagle ignition module is not going to be advancing any, Am I correct on that what about the VOS does that stay pluged in. Back in the day when timing automobile engines I know that we had to unplug the vaccum advance. I will be home some time today to consult the manual. But like i said the Manual does not take the Screaming Eagle module into consideration. I wish I had installation instructions on that module. Thanks for that tip I see where you coming from with that!! Thanks !!!

Time the eng same as book says for hook-up and fly wheel line or dots for your yr. S-E mod time same way just has wider RPM range and may have different adv.curve  at higher rpm's.

Sounds like VOE switch isn't working

hdbikedoc

Voes not working ?  here is the test eng off pinch vaccum hose going to voes, start bike and let idle it will be slow  remove pinch on vaccum line  rpm will increase if working

would asume he would have the dot for advanced timing mark,if you are useing a dail back light would you still have to bring motor up to 2000 rpm's?

was just wondering is there a good way you can static time stock 92 motor?

Thanks ya'll I am most certain it is the VOES although I have not pulled it yet. Seems to me that if you Static time it like mentioned above, and everything is working correctly, then the advance should take care of itself? I will pull the VOES and bench test it, It is new from J&P but we all know new doesn't mean flawless.

Your bike is $2,000 away from being dead, solid perfect.  And it always will be.

Reddog74usa

That's pretty slick Pilgram. I always thought the slot with the degree lines along it on the later evo stock ignition plates were for timing purposes.

someone might find the embedded THREAD helpful.

A very easy solution of course for checking "Static" Timing on a carb evo is actually acquiring a DYNA 2000P (Dynatek) as it affords one a very easy way of doing such.  Yes it costs money but can easily do what was being asked as well as providing a better mapping than OEM or many other aftermarket alternatives and it is pretty user friendly actually.

Sounds as if the "Original" Poster is satisfied with his discovery but perhaps this will assist someone else in the future, thus the reason for using a link.

I didn't think it mattered which cylinder/plug wire to put the pick up for the timing light on because both plugs fire at the same time? Unless of course the bike was converted to single fire.

Thanks for posting the timing tips/links, they are very helpful! YD
