I guess that would produce a very smooth power and torque curve, wouldn't it?

On the motor? no.. In fact it would be better to narrow the power band and make more horsepower..

7 speed...

I don't know about you guys but this is my experience.

Driving in Tight Parking lots on the dyna first gear is a little high at idle.

Going down the interstate at 85mph revs are a little high as well.

When I go for a long ride in a group we cruise right at 85-90 from Misissippi all the way to New Mexico Colorado Wyoming and back.

I am thinking a 7 speed and +1 or +2 on the countershaft sprocket will allow less gap between gears (currently we DO have GIANT gaps), lower rpm in parking lots (6mph vs 9mph) and lower rpm at 85-90mph cruise speed Definitely lower by 200rpm+.

Just a thought!

I loved my 3 speed th400 and 727's then I added an advance adapters underdrive splitter... Always had a 6speed of some kind in the pickups since...

Of course I preferred an 18 speed AND 2 speed rears in my 800hp/2800ft-lb heavy hauler as well! :smilep: I am a belts and suspenders kinda guy!

7 speeds on the bike might just be a great idea!

$2700.... Thats hard to swallow.

On that dream supercharged road glide..... Might be interesting!

it's a solution to a problem that does not exist in my opinion, although I wish I did have a lower first gear in my 07, but I can live with it.
That's the advantage of the 7spd, it gets your 1st gear ratio to 10.81 vs 9.59 stock on 09 up or 9.31 on 07-08, 10.82 is what the 3.37 gearing is. I agree that 6 speeds is enough, but I don't want to give up the lower RPMs at 80+ by going to a 30 or 31 pulley, & going to a 30 front pulley still only gets you to 10.23 & you go from 79mph @ 3K to 74 @ 3K. Probably not going to spend $3K+ on it unless I have problems, but it would be nice to have a lower 1st gear.

Back in the 4 speed days, we had options from Andrews. If you chopped a dresser, the decker "low" first gear could be raised for the lighter bike, and the 3rd gear that was so close to 4th gear could be lowered to make a more even gear range in the box all around. Is anyone making gears for the new 6 speed boxes that address the 1st gear ratio (or any other gear ratio for that matter)?

Well from what I know or think I know (which is not much) as far as MPG goes a final drive of 1-1 at 50-55 MPH is best for MPG. Which is a 5 speed I think. Right? What is the final drive on a 6 or 7? I would guess they would follow along at .86 for 6 and a .73 for a 7. Is this right? Which would all come down to how fast you can or will ride. And weather or not you want parking lot creature features. I got a 18 sp in my truck to mountainman. But only use 6-10 of them depending on weather I'm loaded or empty, starting out on uphill, downhill or flat ground.

The stock 5spd, the stock cruise drive 6spd, & the Baker 7spd are all 1-1 in top gear, the final drive ratio is determined by the primary & belt pulley gear ratios. The 5spd was geared at 3.15, except for the early FI bikes which were 3.37, the 07-08 were 2.79, & the 09 up are 2.875. As kd said it would be great if you could just change 1st gear ratio on the 6spd, but nobody makes one & I don't think it's possible with the way the gear set is constructed. Since it would cost almost as much to build a new 6spd with the right ratios as a 7spd, I'm guessing that's why Baker decided to go with the 7spd. Plus there's a lot of people that just want to brag that they've got more than the next guy, even if they don't know what the advantages are. The 1st gear ratios are 10.11, 10.82, 9.31, & 9.59 respectively, the Baker 7spd would be 10.81 in a 09 up.

Thanks all!.  Decided to pass.  And whoever it was that asked, the bike is a 08 ElectraGlide.

I'm thinking 2 speed powerglide for Harleys   :chop:    All in all I love the six speed running around that 80 mark .. world of difference. the sweet spot on the 7 speed ,  100?   I'm good for now with the 6 speed

7th gear in the DD7, is the same ratio as the 6 speeds 6th gear, so cruising rpm's stay the same. The major benefit is the lower first gear, closer spacing between shifts, and smoother shifting.
