The paint on my 1980 shovel was kinda crappy anyway. Going to strip prime and probably go flat black. All I need to paint is the tanks and the rear bob fender. Need paint that can stand up to the occasional gasoline spillage.

It must be true,I read it on the internet.

You could send Seattledyna a PM and see what it would cost to have him do it.  It may not be as expensive as you think.  He could also probably recommend a paint.

PPG used to make some rattle can paints that were pretty good.  Not sure they would stand up to gasoline, but were better than the typical rattle can.

Plasti dip it.  I have never used it but it seems like a popular thing to do lately.

Several years ago I painted mine flat black. I used the engine enamels sold at Autozone. Stood up to fuel pretty good. When it needed touch up, a beautiful clean bike was just a couple dollars away.

I use Duplicolor paints when I have a patch job to do. It's an automotive paint and as long as you clear it, it will hold up to gas just fine. If you're going to strip your tank and fender make sure you use the filler primer and wet sand. If done with patience you can get a pretty good look with it. It won't be show but it will be respectable.
http://www.duplicolor.com/products/   you can get these paints at local parts stores or if you have a Meijer grocery store, the carry it in their automotive section.

AS A SIDE NOTE, RUN HOT TAP OVER THE CAN. WARM PAINT COMES OUT NICE AND SMOOTH, NO GLOBS OR SPLATTER. AND YES I'VE PAINTED MORE THAN ONE BIKE WITH A "BURP" CAN. (UNFORTUNATLY).

I'm nowhere near a pro by any means, but I've done my share of Shaker can and Gun. I have never heard of warming the paint. I've worked with 4 or 5 different body and paint pro's and none of them ever mentioned it either. I'll have to give that a try in the near future. Thanks for the tip. Maybe It'll save me some sanding time.

Yup, that. I've seen a couple bikes local done with Rhino spray, one black and one red. Actually pretty darn cool. Scratches be damned but it could be a PIA to wash !! :)

Well I hope your back gets back to normal .  Get well soon.  Plasti dip is not thick like Rhino liner.  Someone posted a cool video of it not too long ago.  ????

I used John Deere Blitz Black on my fork lowers and it has held up pretty well.

I did some parts on my shovel with Rustoleum satin black. The oil tank for one. I like satin over totally flat black anyhow but that's just me. I used the same paint on my pick-up toolbox and side rails. Looked pretty darn good but after a few years of sun it kind'a turned flat.

Just my opinion but I don't think flat ages well.

I've done the warming thing. It increases the can pressure, especially near the end. :pop:

You would be so surprised at how well you can rattle can a bike. My whole bike is rattle can and people still go "Nice Bike" ... after 6 years. It is time to break it down now to do the frame though, too many chips and crap, it's a ten footer now.. "Looks good from ten feet"... lol.
If it ain't broke... Fix it until it is.

I guess it's all about the prep and a good primer job. I like satin not too much of a detailer. Was kind of leaning the duplicolor way. When I was a kid used to go around junk week in town and find old garden tractors and paint them up. Seemed like duplicolor was gasoline resistant. This was 40 yrs ago things have changed.

Yep prep is very important. My fenders and tank are the Rustoleum satin black too and a bit of chrome in the right places. I did the frame in black crinkle engine paint, looked very cool for a long time but after six years of road and rocks it needs to be redone.
Good luck on whatever you decide.
