My son is looking at a 1974 Sportster.
Seller says it has a registration only.

Would that be correct?

What year did TITLES start?

In Pennsylvania titles have been around long before that. In 1964 my Honda had a title. New York  :idunno:
Listen to the jingle the rumble and the roar.

Depends on the state.  Some states are registration only and that is your only proof of ownership.

Does it have a 13 digit VIN or a 17 digit VIN? Some states had transferable registrations prior to 1980/81 when there were 13 digit VIN numbers. See what state the bike is registered in, then call DMV to see if there is a title available. If not, make sure you can register the bike in your state with just a registration.

Call the DMV in the state where the bike is registered and make sure they are ok with no title.  If you are going to take it to a different state, find out what you need to bring it in before you lay down any money.  My 1949 FL had a title from TN and now has a title from AZ.

I would have your son and Seller go to the DMV for the change of Ownership.

In N.H. only required if the vehicle is under 10 years old.
If you have to stop and think about if it is right or wrong, Assume it is wrong.

I didn't include the state;

New York State

(you know, the one with the new gun laws  :down: )

On the front of the registration  "Transferable" if a title is not needed in NYS. If a title is needed the registration will have "NON-Transferable" across the front.

In NYS if a title is not needed to transfer ownership the word "Transferable" will be printed on the front. The back of the registration has to be signed by the seller to transfer. It will say "Non-Transferable" if a title is needed. If he is going to register it in NYS the seller has to sign a sales/gift form for tax purposes.

1973 and later NYS vehicles have a title. If the owner lost the title, he can apply for a duplicate at the DMV. You won't be able to register the bike with out the title.
