'05 Road King Twin Cam 88 with 28,000, developed small engine oil leak - 1/2 qt in 4k miles.  Drips down inside primary onto frame rail - it is motor oil, not primary oil. Can see oil residue on drive belt sprocket area too - see attached snapshot. Any idea as to what all needs to be replaced? Anyone have a list of special tools needed and / or a step by step guide? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Need to clean it up and find the source of the leak.  You should have a service manual if u decide to dig into it.

clean it up and sprinkle some talcum powder or baby powder in the area so you can see where its coming from but if motor oil probably the seal on the crank behind the primary

I had a similar Leak.. Cleaned it like suggested and found it right where the drop started again. Pondering on when and How to go about fixing a little drip leak,,,,, Luckly my crank went out THEN I had to reseal the motor when I replaced the crank... :hyst:

I would of MUCH rather have put up with a small leak.

In 05, the original factory specs called for Syn3 20-50 in the engine, trans and primary. So I take it you have replaced with different oil?

Are you sure it's engine oil and not tranny oil? My 05 developed a leak from the trans mainseal that looked a lot like that. The difference for me was that I had 75/90 gearoil in the trans and could smell the difference.

Lookslike an inner primary seal leak to me are you sure its not primary fluid ? have you changed to atf? primary fluid looks similar to engine oil!

Since we're looking down from the top, it appears to be the shift shaft seal.

Trans oil leaking from a worn shifter shaft seal drips down the inside of the primary and collects around the bottom rear of the primary, the frame rail and on the sprocket and belt.

Also, if the main shaft sprocket nut vibrates loose oil leaks around the quad seal, out of the main seal of the trans and collects in the same places.

I would bet that you're loosing trans oil and that your 1/2 quart loss of engine oil every 4000 miles is misting from your crank case breathers.  You don't notice it because you're probably venting the breathers back through the throttle body.

Try this, order a quart of Redline Shockproof trans oil, drain your trans and refill with the Redline and ride for a while.  If the fluid leaking becomes Pepto-Bismol pink you can be sure it's your trans that giving you the problem.

I would agree with Wicked, the most likely culprit is the shifter shaft seal!

Engine oil should not be leaking in that area.  Probably shifter shaft seal.
