Planning a couple rides this year and was reflecting on issues encountered on past rides...

We found ourselves in the middle of nowhere last year and the only gas available was 87 octane (personally believe it was not even that high).  We normally top off when we know that the roads ahead are well off the beaten path.  Was first thinking we just carry octane boost, but looks like the race fuel companies (VP, Sunoco, etc) no longer carry it and I'm guessing after reading the MSDS for VP C5, EPA put a stop to that ...

So, race gas is available locally in cans and at gas station pumps.  Figured we would carry a little and blend it when we need it.  The bikes have been tuned to run on the California crap they sell as 91 ot.

Bottom-line, anyone use the Reda gas can?  feedback?  other options for cans or boost?

Thanks

I have one and have used it before, works fine.  I do change the gas in it a few times a year just to keep it from sitting too long.  Use to carry a couple of the aluminum bottles from Mountain Safety but the gallon can is better.

Shaped to fit the saddle-bag too.

I have also filled up with whatever is available in the middle of nowhere and have not experienced any ill-effects.  Would not make a habit of it but if in a pinch I would not hesitate to do it again.

Just ordered Reda can this week, it should be here in a week or so.  Octane boost is good, but you need gas to mix it with.  Hoping to travel a few extra miles if needed with the Reda can on board this summer.

Why do you need more octane? I can somewhat understand carrying extra gas but why high octane? I've had some pinging in high temperatures but the motor lived through it.

Been in places where you can only purchase regular (non premium) gas @ 87 octane... Bike will ping badly on it so we are looking to carry racing fuel (haven done the math yet) let's say 110 octane that we can mix in the bikes gas tank with regular to increase the total octane to say 92...

Not worrying about running out just unable to purchase premium.  History has taught me that riding through Indian lands and back roads in the west your not always going to find 91 octane...   :missed:

For what it's worth, in my many years of traveling at higher elevations in the west, I've found that lower octane gas really doesn't affect the combustion process like it does at 1000-2000 feet. I've even used 85 octane (probably 4-5000 ft elevation) in both Evo's and TC's where nothing else was available and never even had any pinging.

:agree:   On my last Midwest ride from CA last Sept.,  running current 120 motor at 10.8:1 c.r.  had to make about 4 stops that did not have premium fuel, at the altitude we were running had no pinging problems at all.   forgot to load the octane booster anyway

I bought a Reda last year at the Sturgis rally. He was set up at Black Hills Harley Davidson in Rapid City, and convinced me I needed it.
I don't care for it. Pushing the filler to get the fuel flow is a pain in the ass. I get gas spills and leaks with it, tossed it in the corner of the garage and will leave it there.

 thanks for the heads up...

I figured out who manufactured the can and they sell a 1 gal can with that fuel spout that will fit within the bags. I found it at local hardware store for $10.00.  Not planning on carrying extra gas, except for these kinda trips.  Heck, @ $10.00 we'll probably leave them behind when empty.  FYI, The Plastics Group -Part NO. 85013

Guys, I did the routing already so I know that the places we'll need the 91 octane is in altitudes and heat where it most likely won't be available...  The US did learn after General Custer got his butt kicked, the Indians were not given the high ground (well at least in Arizona, New Mexico & Utah)...

Not sure who makes it but J&P sells one that is angled to fit in a hard saddlebag towards back side. It's about $35 though. Seems a little pricey for a 1 gallon plastic jug, but since its made for a Harley,

a lot cheaper than the Gallon when its delivered at 2 am in the middle of no ware  Been there, done that  :emoGroan:

They fit the hard bags well. Very little vapor as the unit is sealed by the cap.

I have and use one of the Reda cans. Never had a problem with it, no leaks, no vapors. Carry it on all extended trips. It saved my a$$ once, and it saved a buddy of mine's once. Usually fill it up with premium just before a long road trip and keep it in the bag unless it's needed to top off where premium isn't available, or running out of gas. I too spoke with the owner of the place at Sturgis a coupla years back, but I already had my can before that. His wife was at the front of the tent doing the sales pitch, and let's just say, I was fixated on cans, but they sure weren't the Reda cans!!  :hyst:
