Hi all.

I was looking into replacing cams on my super glide custom, but quickly realized then I wanted a big bore kit, but the wallet can't handle all that right now.

So now I am considering putting on a bigger sprocket to essentially change the gearing to give it a little more get up and go. While this will not give more power it should help with torque so to say, correct?

Also this bigger sprocket will also result higher RPMs under normal riding conditions, is this something to be concerned with?

Lastly, if I only change the sprocket will my speedometer be off?  It is analog so I believe it should still be accurate...can anyone confirm?

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris,
To answer your questions in a specific way, you'd have to tell us what year your bike is, and which sprocket (or pulley?) you are planning to change.

Generally speaking, the change you describe will help acceleration but reduce top speed, reduce fuel economy, and cause a speedometer error, unless your bike is old enough to still have the speedo driven off the front wheel.

It is a 2008 Dyna Superglide Custom.  I was looking the the rear sprocket, but have not decided on a size yet. The current sprocket is stock.

Check out the .583 cams for your bike and a good tune, worked great in a 95" Heritage softail for that low end torque

These are pulley's now days with belt drive, more aftermarket sizing available for the front than the rear and it will cause speedo error, also will you have enough adjustment or will you need to replace the belt

You can replace your stock 32T front sprocket with a 30T and still have plenty of adjustment left on the drive belt. That mod will change your final drive ratio from the stock 2.0625 to 2.20.  So it will affect your speedo and odometer. That can be recalibrated with most tuners, but I'm not sure about the stock ECM.
The change will give noticeably more low end pull. It also makes 6th gear more useable for me, as I don't spend a lot of time on highways cruising at higher speeds. For example, at 70 mph you are at about 2555 rpm and with a 30T it would be 2700 rpm.
