I just replaced the clutch cable because I put 12" monkey bars on my street glide. The problem I am having is there is not enough play in the cable to mount the clutch lever in the perch. The adjustment in the cable does not give any play at all. What am i missing? Do I need to actually need to adjust the clutch?

need some help

Maybe a dumb question, but we need to start some where. Do you have the cable adjustment screwed together all the way? Cable jacket inserted all the way into the tranny housing? Do you have the cover off the tarry yet to see if something is fudged up in the cover and arm?
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!

If the cable isn't long enough to mount the lever with the cable attached, then you need a longer cable. The cable itself is fixed length. The cable sheath should have an inch or so of initial freeplay to allow the lever to be installed in the housing. Then it is adjusted for about 1/16" freeplay.

open the derby cover, loosen the lock nut and back the adjuster off a few turns. this should give you enough slack to get the cable where it belongs.  once it's in place, adjust like normal.
Ignorance is bliss, and accuracy expensive. How much of either can you afford?

I just changed mine last week, and I didn't have to touch the clutch adjustment. Maybe if you're changing to a longer cable, you need to add freeplay from the ramp end, but if the cable adjustment doesn't give any play at all, you may not be able to make up for it by adjusting the clutch. You also need to make sure the cable is long enough so that it doesn't bend too much between the lever and the down tube.

Took a quick lunch ride today. No problems. Still have 1/16" freeplay. All good. Maybe I lead a charmed life (fat chance).
