Need a good gasket remover that won't melt the black wrinkle on the surrounding engine cases. Any recomendations?
Thanks, Flhfxd.

Guessing that you are talking about your noted bikes, they would have metal liners inside of paper instead of being made of just paper. When I first took apart a modern HD I thought I had to get the paper off and worked my butt off trying to clean it off. Eventually, the metal liner just fell off and the inner paper side came off with it, leaving a clean surface. You may not be as dumb or as inexperienced as I was but I just wanted to make sure... I can't think of an instance on my bike when I needed gasket remover.

Some auto parts stores used to carry the stuff but most of them no longer do because it didn't work that well. A hard metal gasket remover that you can keep sharp on your bench grinder seems to be the best solution... and a dremel tool.

A nice hard , sharp plastic scraper.

I use a single edged razorblade. For the older fiber gaskets that are super stubborn, I sometimes have to get the die grinder and an old scotchbrite pad, out and work very carefully.
I have used gasket remover spray from NAPA and still have a half a can of it at the shop, but it will eat the powder coating or paint off with in seconds. I still prefer elbo grease and a razor blade.

It was previously disassembled. It isn't a modern gasket. The old paper type gasket was sprayed with Copper hi temp adhesive sealant. So it's definately not gonna just fall off.
I was just looking for an easy way out but I can see where this headed.
Cheers, Flhfxd.

An Xacto Knife with various different blades, is also a fantastic gasket scraper tool. Lots of patients, a few cold beers and a good chair.

Thanks Easy. Sounds like "quality time" in the garage.

Carefully dab some ZipStrip gel (methylene chloride?) on what's still stuck with a q-tip the night before.   It will take the black wrinkle off if you use too much.

Maybe not..  I seem to remember Yamaha or Honda had a really good, low effort gasket remover.  This was years back, but we were not making any progress using all the "normal" ways to remove old gaskets, and somebody donated a can of metric gasket remover and we were done in no time.... minds to old to remember the details though.
