93 fatboy with stock OEM speedometer.  The trip meter quit working at 69.9 ..... how is that for luck??  anyway, got gas and reset it to 0.  There is a chrome plastic knob on the side you rotate to reset the mechanical trip meter.  there is virtually no instrumentation on this bike and I use the trip meter to determine when I need gas so I don't go to reserve on the tank or get stuck in the middle of nowhere, it did not get past 9 miles and it hung up again.  its the OEM speedo with 59K miles on it. my parts book is calling for part number 67027-91A.  I tried to find the part online, but no luck, the online HD places are saying not available.  I really don't want to go with an aftermarket unit although I did find one at Narly choppers for ..... you gotta love it.... $69.00....

Further research and i find a blurb that part number 67011-91 is superceded from 67027-91A.  It seems that 67011-91 is available but there are no pictures.  The descriptions state without a bracket?  not sure what this means.  I need to find a new speedo for the bike, and would like to know if anyone out there knows what the difference is between the 67011-91 and the 67027-91A???  does the face look the same?  I assume it mounts the same way.  This is a cable driven mechanical speedometer since its off a 93 softail.

Also , I have been having issues with the speedo needle bouncing when its hot outside, it will bounce wildly, but since it has been cooler here in AZ,  not that hot yet, the issue is mostly gone.  In the past I have tried different cables and this fixed the problem for a short time, even tried lube per the manual, this also fixed it for maybe 200 miles...but that was a speed needle bounce issue.
Presently, needle works but the odometers keep getting stuck and hung up, so I know the drive at the wheel is working.

Since I use that trip gauge for a gas gauge I really need to get it fixed.

I appreciate any help you may offer.

Don't know if this will be much help - but the "A" part number should be interchangeable with the other - they probably changed something on the face.  If you pull some of the motorcycle magazines, you should find speedo/tach rebuilding places - they do a great job if you want to keep the original and they will keep the original mileage on it.  Tho, I'd probably buy the replacement, AND send mine out for the repair.  The "bracket" is the part that's bolted to the back of the speedo, that bolts to the dash.  There are also some nice aftermarket ones that combine a speedo and a tach.   My speedo on my 92 started jumping around too - someone told me it's lint/debris in there so I took it off and blew it out with my compressor - seems to be better.

Mine have been acting up to.  I don't trust the fuel gauge to be exact anyway and there's no petcock on the injected bikes so I pushed my road glide to a station some time after I got it.  Luckily only a hundred yards away by the time it quit.  What I've been doing is just adding the miles onto my odometer.  Something I did with some of my other bikes which had no trip meter that worked.

Also if you are in phoenix, there's bound to be plenty of places that still work on mechanical speedometers for the cops and cabbies.  There's a place I pass weekly called Dick's Speedo-tach on McKellips and McClintock that's bound to work on them. Otherwise any big city will have a place where the cops and cabbies go to have there speedometers and odometers calibrated.

Those bicycle computers have multiple trip meters and functions for average speed, elapsed time and other.  Usually will go up to 100mph and have been known to be put on motorcycles.  They cost $10-20 and some even light up at night.

Good luck!

thanks Pedaldude, I was just on McClintock last night too, wish I would have seen your post before then.

concerning cleaning it out for the needle bounce, what did you clean out?  where.  I have been replacing and lubing the cable and that seems to work great for about 200 miles, then the bounce comes back.  I would like to know how the speedo is blown out or cleaned out to eliminate that.  at any rate I will have to get something to work like a gas gauge.

I assume all the speedos are the same, in that they "vent" - my 92 (cable driven) and my 98 (electronic) both vent, and get fogged up once in a while - altho the 98 doesn't have any visible vents, the 92 has some slots on the bottom - I drilled some holes at those vents then used my compressor, throttled down, to blow it out.  Don't know if that helped, or the cable lube, but it did settle it down quite a bit.

I don't know where the Fatboy speedo pickup is, but on my 92 springer it's at the front wheel - that drive gets messed up sometimes, so lubing it up real good helps.  I could take my 81 FLH front wheel drive apart, but not the 92, so i just soaked it in oil over night.

BTW - if you buy a replacement, be sure to get the correct speedo ratio.

Good luck
