Hello folks
I'm off on holiday to Hawaii for a couple of weeks - a week in Oahu and a week on the big island. Can anyone reccomend a good HD shop or indy place? seriously considering picking up some new tyres and bringing them home with me when I see the prices, also shocks - and other bits in the kid's luggage if I can get them past the Mrs.....!
any suggestions appreciated....
also a place to hire a sporty for a couple of hours to get away?
cheers

Andy, have you checked out Mother HD web site for shops on the Island?
There is some info there to get you started and cross referenced with the guys here.
I know a couple of guys who have done the family trip(with kids) and the plan was to rent a
Road King, but when the Fun Police found out expensive it was.
That plan was tossed aside and in its place was a rented Jeep for the family.
There are some very narrow roads from what I have been told ...I am only relaying  second hand
info as once again I will say I have never been there myself.
Check the rental info before you go, so not to be surprised by the costs is what I am suggesting.

There's two on the big island I believe one in Kona and the other in Hilo, prices are more than mainland USA but it is in the middle of the Pacific. I think on Oahu it's close to the airport.

the one on Oahu is lots of shirts as I recall....on the Kona side of BI is a regular dealership....there are several places to rent a bike on both islands owned by indys and maybe one by the dealer.....probably a better time riding if you rent on BI...Oahu too small and congested....aloha

When we were on Maui a few years ago there were rental places all over the place. But I don't rememeber seeing a dealer. Not the island you were asking about, but maybe helpful for the rental.

I rented in Oahu years ago and the first bike they sent me out on was a total POS - front end was tweaked and it handled like crap.  Took it back and got a good bike and had a nice day going around the island but heading back into Waikiki at rush hour was a little nuts. I believe there is a regular dealer in Kona and would recommend riding there. Good roads and lots of interesting things to see. I will confirm that there is a HD dealer on Maui in Kahului by the airport.  Maui is a great place to ride. I am very familiar with all of the riding there - the best of all the islands I would say.  Best advice is to thoroughly check out the condition of the bike you are renting.

Big Island Harley Davidson is the HD dealer and prices range from 210/day for an XL to 230/day for a bagger.

I got a frossssssty cold pitcher of beer that says there AINT no WAY you'd ever find ANY motorcycle parts OR tires cheaper in Hawaii!

(for similar reasons why fuel is easily $1 or more higher in places like Silverton CO <<<<<< somebody had to haul it there!)

Check out Big Island Motorcycles for rentals.  Last week I rented an older Road King for four days, toured the whole island.  It ran great, and was about $100/day.

Forget renting from the HD dealers unless you are made of money....

I rented an 11' road king from cycle city hd in oahu two years ago and they had quite a few bikes in the store when i was there. Nice sized stealership. As said a lot of t shirts too, lol. They are near the airport like previously stated. Greatriding around the island along the coast although i dont know that i ever got out of 3rd gear except for when i got on the interstate for a few minutes, lol.

Thanks guys I'll look these up. I'm after a new pair of Harley riding boots too so I'll have a look at the dealerships you mention. I know Hawaii is more expensive than the mainland, but I'm guessing it is probably cheaper than Australia.
$100/day looks pretty good for a rental.
cheers
