Trans main shaft is bugured up. Anybody got any ideas on how to clean up the shaft for the drive pulley locknut on a 06 six speed trans? I have cleaned the threads with a angle file and the nut will start then hit a brick wall like its the wrong thread. I don't think the odds of comming up with a left hand thread die is to good.

This trans was shipped in January of 07 and is an Ultima 201-59 Polished Ultima LSD Six Speed Transmission for a softail evo. Surely it doesn't have the 07 and up versus the 91 to 06 Locknut do it?

Thanks,
Devo

Sounds to me that the threads are different. When you take a bolt and try to start a nut that is not quite right , it will start and stop dead like you are saying.

pick up a thread file that is the correct threads per inch, long as they aint to bad this could fix it, left or right hand dont make no difference to a thread file, or go to machine shop , sometimes if ya throw em 10 bucks and a deposit they will let you borrow correct left hand die, good luck

Specialx1 is dead on with the thread file - Rt hand Lh hand dont matter, just match the pitch  http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000K1GAI0?smid=A30DGJTMHYAU9C&tag=nextag-auto-delta-20&linkCode=asn  Keep in mind the nut itself may have distorted threads too, causing a hang up.

Yup, agreed on the thread file. That's a great first step.

Another, albeit secondary, tactic is to use an old or "sacrificial" nut as a die of sorts.  This involves hacksawing usually four cuts through the threads (I believe a 45 degree angle is recommended, but you should google all of this!) and then using the nut as a sort of die to chase the threads.

I may google this myself now that you've got me thinking about it.  I'll report back if I find a good tutorial.

Is this the nut that come off or is it a new one? If its new you need to check it with a thread pitch gauge and the shaft to make sure they are the same pitch. If your re-using the old nut how are the threads in it?

I've never heard of a thread repair file, I think that will do it as the threads are not that bad. Thanks loads.

Call Kromhard in Akron, OH  330-535-7129.  They should be able to fix you up with a die as long as you can give them the thread pitch.

Maybe you may have some luck e-mailing them for thread size. Or ask the above.

The thread repair file I got at NAPA for 12.00 worked like a charm. The guy who invented this thing has my vote for the nobel prize, free beer and eternal flame. Thanks guys for the tip.
