My compensator nut came loose so I'm in the process of looking things over to see what might have been damaged or just need replacing. I found that the spline on the rotor is a bit sloppy and the rotor spun on the spacer where it makes contact on the inside of the rotor. When it spun, the spacer wore a groove into the inside of the rotor about .015 deep. So, I'm gonna replace the rotor. The outside face of the rotor is stamped "HIGH OUTPUT" but how can I find out what that output is? The indy I was gonna order it thru asked me how many amp my system is so he could get the right one.

Thanks,

Mark

I'm assuming you have an 01 fatboy?  Cross referencing Ronnies and New Castle it looks like 38 amp.  There were 2 that year, carb and efi, but both show the same charging equipment.  New Castle says the Stator is 38 amp.  You don't want to use a 45 amp rotor with that stator as it might overheat.

Thanks for the reply.
Well, that's what I hope it is.  I called the HD dealer where I bought the bike new in 2000 to get a price and to ask if they knew the amps.  The parts guy said that it was a 38 amp and that's the only one listed for my bike.  Turns out the dealer is about $30 less than the indy that didn't know what the amp was. And the dealer has 2 in stock. Gonna pick it up today.

Hope to get it back together this weekend.

Thanks again,

Mark

Don't toss the old one as there are ways to recover them for continued use.

Do tell?  I jst removed and installed a new rotor and stator.  How would you rebuild the rotor?
If you have to stop and think about if it is right or wrong, Assume it is wrong.

There was someone making splined inserts that could be welded into a stripped rotor. Their name excapes me at the moment but it'll come.  Then there's always the "weld the shaft extension" process.

I'm gonna install a new HD rotor and hope that I get another 147K mi out of it. Key word being "hope" 'cause as you can see in the attached pic the crank spline isn't what it used to be. I honed off the burrs and the rotor and shaft extension fit better but I'm sure not as good as on a new crank. I'm gonna put 4 drops of red loc-tite on the nut threads, not just 2 like the book calls for, and torque it to 65 ft/lbs (the max) and let it set a day or 2 before I start it up. Anyone have a crank spline look like this after a comp nut came loose?
Thanks for the input.

I think you mean 165 ft lbs not 65

To confirm, my '04 has high output marked on it and it is 38 amps.
