I have mag wheels on my 85 FXEF and want to replace them with spoke wheels. I have been told that 85 is an odd ball year and that the off set on the sprocket side is different than a standard shovel head hub. Does anyone have an 85 with a spoke rear wheel that they can measure or would know what the off set is for this year/model?

I converted my 85 FXEF to spokes.   The OEM rear chain sprocket is dished or con vexed (and 51 T) from the factory.  I thought at first I was going to need to create some elaborate spacers, or whatever to make the swap fit and get it all lined up.

The first 40 spoke rim I bought was for a 80s Sportster and it was a direct swap, fit 100%.

Then I decided to change to 80 spoke rims.  Bought a rim for a softail of the era and again was thinking I was going to need to make spacers for the sprocket etc,  What I found after lining things up was that it did not seem to need the offset sprocket from the OEM set up.  I bought a flat sprocket for a sportster (47 T) since I was changing gearing too, and guess what, perfect fit.

So there are a couple ways to go to convert to spokes.  Definitely like the looks of the bike better with spokes.  Go ahead all, flame on about mags and superior reliability, but hey, spokes rule on the older bikes.

Good luck Red.

I may have lucked out. I have a real nice OEM rear wheel on the shelf. One side has 1/4" more offset than the other. I was told that this wheel was for an 80's Sportster. Can you tell me if the 1/4" more on the one side is what I need for this bike? If so I lucked out big time.

IIRC 1/4" sounds right.  But the wheel I used (40 spoke Sportster) is long gone from my inventory now.  I will go back to receipts here is a bit and see if I can find a valid part number.  Maybe that can match to a year or descriptionhat can help.

Ok Red,

The invoice I have from 1992 shows I ordered a CCI part 19-687 with an descriptions of 16" FX / FL (Guess I recalled incorrectly about the Sporty?)

And the OEM parts manual I have for my 85 shows a 40951-82 for FX and FXST

Hopefully this will help.

J&P shows the following fitment for the OEM part number.  So maybe I was NOT wrong on the Sporty?
