Well first off hello. I got a proub i hope someone can help me out with. My battery died on me other day so i bought a new one. It seems to be doing fine but today when i went out to the grocery store i noticed smoke coming from undr my 99 sportster. So i towed it home and started it back up and more smoke came from a black piece on a wire coming from what i think is the Cycle Electric Rectifying Regulator so i turned it off but the piece is fried enough to break. Im in a panic here and i have no clue what i need to do .Can anyone help i got a few pictures also. anything would be great ..

ok i think my Cycle Electric Rectifying Regulator went bad and thats why my battery was dying. Looks like i can get one for around 150$ but im not sure how bad the rest of the wire is. actually i know its burnt up on the end so im not sure if i have to replace the whole wire or if i can splice it into a new plug .I dont even know where the wire goes ,it gets lost in the frame. I guess im gonna go buy the haynes service book on it tommarow. I just got the bike last week and im a first time rider/owner.Also if someone could point me to a good place to buy the H/D facory service manual.anyone ever had htis proub and could give me some advice would be greatly appreciated. thx

that plug is coming from the alt/stator.get a manual, factory ones are the best, from hd
dealer. do not replace the regulator/rectifier with out checking the stator, this will
be explained in the manual. good luck    Al

ok ty i was able to get my hands on a 1986/2003 h/d service manual and that helps me understand a whole lot better. How do i tell if the stator is bad? visual inspection? Even if it looks ok will i have to change it out anyway since the connector end is damaged? or do they make connectors i can replace with.same with the regulator, is there a way to test it? to see if its good/bad? is there something else that could have caused this?maybe i should just replace both the reg and the stator.

I would call Cycle Electric. They are a good company and I'm sure they can offer some help.
It must be true,I read it on the internet.

book should show you how to test.with an ohm meter check the wires going to
the stator, the two wires should show some ohm value(if infinity/open it's bad) then check
each lead to ground, there should be nothing going to ground(if there is it's bad)

Open inspection cover on left side of bike, if it smells burnt then stator is history.

If you go to http://www.cycleelectricinc.com/ and under the Technical tab there is 'Diagnosing Alternator problems'. Being it's their product that might be good place to look for answers. Also a call to them could be helpful. Just sayin.... :smiled:

The wire you are referring to goes to the 30 or 40 amp breaker on your bike, and then to the battery. the new rectifier comes with this wire. but as stated earlier, check the stator to see if its bad.

ok i just checked it and when i test from lead to ground there is nothing on either but when i test them together i get around 28.0 .My book says it shouldnt go over 0.2 - 0.4. Does 28.0 sound right? or maybe i didnt do something correct.

Sounds like your stator went out and took out the regulator . Cycle electric makes the best charging system componets they give you a two year warranty on there products Harley does not give a waranty on the charging system componets. Give cycle electric a call it well worth your while

The Charging system on a Harley is not somewhere to pinch pennies. Buy the complete system from Cycle Electric. Fantastic performance and dependable company. I deal with them a whole lot. All these years, only had to warranty maybe 2 charging systems.

Just ride the damned thing!
