Just a note for other readers, since you already bought the alignment pins.  A good work-around is to use the crush sleeve from a compression fitting on the bolts.  It's got tapered ends and will center the lifter block as well as the tool
This ain't Dodge City, and you ain't Bill Hickock.

Crap! So much for my Brain wave I had MANY Years ago, (Not sure there were even Alignment Pins Then! LOL) That's what I've been using for Years, and Years, and YEARS! Then, my Son bought me one about ten or so years ago, so I Bucked up and bought a second one a couple of years ago, just so I had a Matching pair  :idunno:....... Those sleeves (I Have Stainless crush sleeves) Always worked VERY Well for me, I'd of had no problem using them forever. Good luck with Your build zimm.

I see in the pic you are running a stock plastic breather. A good upgrade is a S&S steel unit. The plastic gear tends to tear up the breather bore.

Short update, Scott called today and has my parts ready and boxed up.  I just paid up the bill and they're shipping out this Monday!  Awesome.

I hear you on the breather gear, but mine looks perfect, the bore is perfect, and scott said it's fine to just keep running the old one.

Dont lose the little plastic washer that sits on the outside of that breather gear, you need that when you put it back together.

Found out my rear motor mount was broken. Good thing my local Indy talked me into changing it.

Rivets broken on one side. No wonder she wobbled in a hard curve.

Well I watched an hours worth of youtube and read the service manual.  What's the best order of things to put the motor back together?  Cam, timing cone, tappet blocks, cylinders, heads?

We generally start in the cam chest, then move up.
Just holler if you have questions, or run into a snag, Greg.
Did you see I skimmed those cylinder bases?

zimm,
I'm eagerly watching this thread. Looks good so far. I have very similar upgrades planned for the motor in my '97. I will also be going with Scott and his crew at Hillside. Just waiting to get a few more bucks squirreled away before I call them up and set the wheels in motion.

ide get a steel breather, also as far as the lifters go,just replace the rollers (unless the bores are worn and honing to next OS will be done)theres no reason to replace the whole lifter

zimm

Thanks Scott!

I was going to do the cam chest today, but stopped when I saw my breather gear (thought is fine when I first looked at it).  I started another thread.  I think I'll order a steel gear and have it early next week.

I can start on the dyna ignition install.  Looks like I need to pull the stock module and wiring out- I just glanced at the instructions.  I'll get that done and be ready for the cam later in the week.

Breather came in yesterday, got it and the cam installed.  Turns out end play is .070 so I need a shim.  Stuck until I can get some.

I managed to make a bracket to mount my horn behind the battery. Hope it clears when the motor is all back together.

looks like trust washer is missing at backside of cam.it looks like washer with 2 ears is that there ?thanks pete

zimm

I didn't have a thrust washer with ears, just a round one.  Maybe a change for 1996?  Service manual shows the washer as round too.

Dealer was a bust on shims, only had a .050 in stock.  Gave me a little line like, "we haven't sold one of those in a LONG time".  Guess they want me to feel bad for having an old motor and I should go get a new twin cam.  But they were open on Sunday so I gave them a shot.

Yesterday I tried out my good 'ol Indy shop and he had a drawer full of them.  Have me a couple to try and I just need to bring back the one that doesn't work.  Picked up a .055 and .060.  Not bad for $4.25.

Had to remove wallpaper and repaint the kitchen with the old lady, so this weekend was a bust.  Maybe next week.....

.060 shim gave me .014 end play. Not perfect, but he didn't have a .065 so I'll leave it as is.  Got the lifters in, cylinders and heads.

Looks good zimm. Make sure you torque everything to spec, a 1/4 inch drive torque wrench really comes in handy for the primary cover, and the rocker boxes. Dont over tighten these bolts, or you are going to be pissed when you develop a leak.

Woods w6 and s&s lifters and pushrods. Wallpaper removal project came out great and momma is happy with her white painted walls. Hopefully this afternoon I can get the valve train in. Two small kids and shopping to do eats up weekends.
