Someone on another forum said that the hand mikes will not work on the 2014 tourers. He said the headset works fine but not the mike. Does anyone know why and is there a solution? I need to know soon so I can cancell my order for the CB install if the mike won't work.

Thanks

no ptt wiring probably due to legal reasons, keeping hands on bars. I bought a throat mic on ebay, works decent. Mike

The handheld mic shows it fits 2014 bikes.

Ok, I just went out to the garage and checked mine.  Regardless of what the book says, it doesn't work.  As stated above, it doesn't recognize the PTT button.  Damn!  I guess I could carry the bike in to the shop and file a complaint.  Could be an oversight and a software fix is needed.

If this is true, how do you operate the CD and intercom when both are on?? Can everyone hear you talking to you passenger?
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!

GaryD

PoorUB, there is a switch that you can activate to either broadcast bike to bike or just to passenger or both.

Stopped at the dealer last night to confirm this. They said they are aware of it and have a solution for it. They have already converted 2 bikes this week and the mike works perfectly. What a relief.......of course now I still have to spend mucho$$$$.   :teeth:

Doesn't have anything to do with it.  I'm talking about the PTT button on the hand mic. Not the one on the bike.   CB uses a PTT switch.   Intercom is VOX if CB is on.  If CB is off, can use PTT or VOX for intercom.  If you are using hand mic, you wouldn't be using intercom anyway as you would not be using a headset since you have the hand mic plugged in.

Good to hear.  I'll have to check with my guys to see if they know about a fix.  I may have to get some info from you if they've never heard of it.

Hi,
Been watching this thread as was going to get  a hand mike for mine, but not keen on paying the cost out for one with a Bar & Shield sticker!! (they are $160 here!!) and was looking at getting a Midland one ($18) and getting the right pin out on the plug done...
BUT...

Just looked at the service manual wiring diagram for the riders headset DIN socket and its pin out is as follows;

Pin 1 - BK - Microphone Common -
Pin 2 - BK - Headset Common -
Pin 3 - PK/BK - Headset right front +
Pin 4 - R - Microphone front +
Pin 5 - PK/GN - Headset left front +
Pin 6 - BK - Jumper to Pin 2
Pin 7 - - - Not connected
Tab - Shield - Microphone shield

Now I'm not 100% on this but looks to me that there is no PTT wire to the DIN socket... does anyone know any better with the new radios?

Having looked at the wiring diags on all models up to 2013, PTT was wired to Pin 7 on the DIN plug..

Probably a running change to the wiring harness coming up.

One would hope.  One would also hope for a Service Bulletin to fix those already out there.

I'm glad you boys are getting the kinks worked out of the '14's before I buy one!!  LOL

The new HK radio has a complex bluetooth set up.... with the software upgrade applied to my 6.5GT it now does lots more with the BT connection to my iPhone...  Not sure of all it is capable of but I'm wondering if a BT Mic might be on the horizon as an upgrade!!

Or maybe even BT headsets to eliminate the cables to the helmet headset!

The CB is made by Midland and they also do BT bike to bike head sets in the UK, not on CB Frequencies but I guess there would not be much difference in the technologies to do it as long as it is legal under FCC rules etc..

Ok - so all we have to do is solder a wire in to pin 7 on the console DIN connector and run it back to the CB module in the fairing.  Can anyone tell me which wire is the PTT signal wire?

Hi harleyjt,
I wish it were that simple!!! Having checked the wiring Diags in the 2014 service manual, The PTT is CanBus controlled on the 14's, the CB module is also CanBus controlled..

I Have no idea how this works  Hopefully someone may be able to enlighten us?

Understand the CAN Bus.  But I think there would probably be a direct wire from Pin 7 of the console to the CB module.  It might not tie into an existing wire, but there should be a PTT pin on the CB module.  At least, from what I'm deciphering from other posts above where a dealer has figured it out.....  I got to believe he's just running a wire from console pin 7 to another pin (or splicing to another wire) at the CB module.

I can't see anything on the wiring Diags.. just shows Can + & Can - ...

I will have a physical look at the wiring on the CB tomorrow... got the fairing off in any case as fitting new chrome mirrors

Ok - I was curious so I went out and pulled the fairing off for a look see.  The CB uses a 12 way connector.  I do see bus wires, but there are a total of 8 wires going into the CB including the 2 bus wires.  4 pins are open.  The module has a pigtail coming out of it that hooks to the bike harness.  I noted the colors and locations for future reference.

On the bike side, there are no open pins - all pins have a wire.  So there are 4 wires that stop at the connector.  The bus wires are obvious:  W/Bk and W/Pk.  Again I noted the colors and locations.

One thing I saw that has me puzzled.  On the bike side harness, there is a clear wire (I can see the copper thru the clear insulation) that goes nowhere.  It is a dead end and is just looped back into the harness sheathing.  On a hunch I checked for continuity between it and pin 7 on the console, but no joy.  Also checked for continuity to ground, but nothing there either.  Not a clue what that wire would be.

So Gary's dealer figured something out that isn't obvious to me at first look.  All the CB wires are used, the bike has wires that stop at the connector.

Maybe Gary can get some more info from his dealer about what he's doing to make it work.

Seems mysterious!!!! CanBus hocuspocus lol....

Looks like data transfer..well how do we deal with this new mysterious technology I think to myself...siting here drinking Mr Jack??????

This is not beyond the realms of our combined brethren I think..but maybe beyond my own abilities...

I know from a previous failure that CanBus does not like a +12V up its arse...so how is this dealt with?

Any technology can be assumed..we just need to understand it!!!

Does anyone know what the PTT signal is?  That is, when pushing the PTT switch does it send 12v to the CB or furnish a ground or ??

Can buss is varied voltage usually between 1.5 and 3.5 volts, any item on the buss has a set value and when that amount comes up others on the buss know what module is "talking", so 12v is a short to positive. You can not tap into a buss! Mike
