winters long here on the east coast and I need something to do. Now that s&s makes a twin cam style engine I was wondering how involved it is to install one into a 02 road king ; is it pretty much a bolt in? I mean other than upgrading the intake & injectors and of course the clutch what else is there? I already have a tmax with auto tune that should handle the fuel injection. The next question is 585 cam or the 640 I'm thinking more 585 because I do more touring than anything else. then again is that Harley 120 a better / easier deal.

I guess i will be the first to say that pulling the r&r ing the motor is acually not that bad to do. I would say a compensator locking tool would be nice. Also a impact gun to help break the compensator loose. Also the Clutch nut is reverse threard. The S&S is better because it had gear drive cams, roller rockers, and a better crank. But the 120r can be had for a very good price. I too know what you mean about long winters on the east coast.

thanks for the reply. I've built several 95inch Harleys for myself and friends along with small and big block chevy and fords just never pulled the whole motor out of one of my Harleys so I was just wondering how easy the s & s motor is to basically bolt up to the Harley trans and primary. it just seems to me to be better and cheaper to change out the motor than to pull mine and ship it out for machine work

The SnS motor is pretty much a drop in deal.. I suspect that the hardest part is getting the oil lines connected.. They've changed the way you hook em up over the years, not sure what the changes are needed.. Most of the stuff is pretty simple.. As far as which cam?? Don't know I'd probably take the 640 because it would be softer down low.. Once you get above about 100-110 fp tq at 2000, no reason to have any more.. You might get better gas mileage out of the 585 but that is just a guess..

Look in the dyno section, there is 124's with the 640 and 585.

If you built engines, then installing one will be a breeze.

S&S engines come with an installation guide.

Running the oil lines to the oil tank isn't too tough, just takes some time and is pretty simple.

Other than the oil lines, you have to remove the primary, clutch, etc.  swap over your sensors and install throttle body injectors and more sensors.  Depending on what size engine your coming from, you will probably need a larger exhaust and throttle body.

That's about it.

Benefits of S&S 124" Engine vs the SE120R

    4 cubes
    EZ Start cams
Timken Sleeve and Timken Left Main Bearing
Better Oil Pump - cooler temperatures, 83% more scavenge
    Adjustable Pushrods
    Roller Rocker Arms
    1 year warranty

One advantage to the 120r, bolt in, no messing with oil lines.  I think it took me a couple hours to do the oil lines on mine.

If I do this im going SnS in my opinion its just a better built motor. From my research I found they sell the oil line kit I will need so that's not a problem. Now what size throttle body do I need and what size injectors? and I was planning to go with a x pipe for the exhaust ether fuelmoto or fullsac .I just want to have all my parts ready to go when I start with as few surprises as possible

Id say a 58mm hpi would work.  Injectors, ask hpi that, they will know best. I'm running 6.2, but I don't think u will need that big.

You will need a clutch, bandit sportman is a really good one that drops right in.

Also will need a new air filter for the throttle.

And an exhaust to won't limit your power.

thanks guys; was doing a little research in the dyno section  58 throttlebody looks to be about right also got info on injector sizes I think I'm going to go with the 585 cam I think it will have a little better low speed manners .Merc63 thanks for the clutch info I like the kiss method ( keep it simple stupid ) now I need to round up the parts. Anybody out there that can point me in the right direction to call let me know. thanks

Merc63

Everything can be bought from the manufacture.  SnS, bandit, Hpi, etc.

Or you can try a vendor on here to see if they can round everything up for you.

If you haven't found anyone on here, you might want to try Dan Thayer,  he can source you all these parts on one invoice and has good support if you run into any issues.

Worth asking for a quote.

Also Star racing could get you most of this stuff too.

Ask both for a price.

They sell 120's for the older twin cams now.

irishrover

Good news he called me back his email is parts @ calcustoms.com he offers the 124 to fit an 02 roadking for $5500 its o long block no intake or ignition that's basically 500 less than list comes with all the SnS warranty's but of coarse shipping is extra so it still might be cheaper for me to get it somewhere else

Merc63

Call dan and star racing.

They can both probably sell you everything.
