I haven't done this yet, but was wondering...

Refrence: S&S instruction sheet # 106-6046 for adjustable pushrods, page 3, first column, Twin Cam, second bulleted note;

http://www.sscycle.com/tech-info/instruction-sheets/?valve-train&ccm_paging_p=2

Instructions say to roll engine forward and feel for the decompression lobe (just before TDC), then let the lifter roll just off of it and adjust there, which makes sense.

Without Easystarts, typicaly when I adjust the rods with travel limiters, I'll go to TDC rear, and adjust for .060 preload, then proceed to the front cyl, and repeat. Depending on the cams, it can be difficult to hold TDC due to valve spring pressure.

With Easystarts, it would seem the position of where you would adjust the rods is gonna be much narrower and more difficult to find and hold, and with limiters the adjustment needs to be more precise because of less plunger travel.

I was thinking adjusting the exhausts first, to eliminate the intake spring pressure might make this task easier to do.

What are your thoughts/suggestions?

Billy...S&S has a you tube video showing how to adjust the p/rods with the EZ start cams.
It is pretty good.

Hope this isn't a hi-jack, but can you run stock pushrods with the 551 or 583 EZ-starts? I'm contemplating/planning next year's mods & would rather pull the tank & rocker boxes than mess with adjustable pushrods. Anyone know if the base circle size is the same as stock?

That helps Ray. I couldn't find it on S&S's website, that place has always been difficult for me to navigate. I come back here and there it is!

it's a little long...but he goes over the travel limiters and the p/rod adjustment for the EZ starts eventually.
I hope it helps.

Billy , I just installed a set of ez starts today . First time using them myself , also used regular S&S adjustables and the standard S&S lifters . I had it kinda easy as the heads were off and I set each cylinder to true TDC which is past the ez start release but just by putting my finger on the exhaust lifter and turning the tire you could feel the release mechanism pretty easily as it rose up a bit then dropped . I could see where you could run into trouble using travel limiters with the ez starts , I think the literature that came with the cams said the release adds about .030" if the pushrod is on it . No biggie with standard lifters as I took mine 4 turns from zero lash ( .128" ) so even if you were on the release you would still have plenty of clearance. Carl1969 , I believe the paperwork that came with my 570 cams said you can use up to the 585 with stock push rods ( stock base circle )

Thanks, man. I'm not a super-wrench, by any stretch of the imagination, 'n like to keep things as simple/foolproof as I can.

I used the easy stars with travel limiters. I would set them to "0" lash, then tighten slightly till there was a little tension rolling the pushrod between your fingers...and that's it...ran at "0" lash for years. Never had a kickback or fart back thru the intake ever.

I asked S&S tech support about this as the instruction sheet kinda contradicts itself on this point. His/their reply was that so long as your heads haven't been shaved for compression you'll be ok (which isn't likely if you've set them up correctly for 570's). If they have been shaved however, you'll need adjustable p-rods or perfect fits.  Bill

Billbuilds, i used adjustables with the 570's . I was answering Carls question but that would be correct about heads being shaved .

     2006FXDCI,
Sorry, didn't mean to select you and me out (570's).  The 585's need compression, too. Bill
