Article written by Paul Dean in the 2000 special edition of Cycle World, Power & Performance, Harley-Davidson It was a performance test of 13 Exhaust systems for Harley Davidson and I think the title was "Shootout At The HD Corral"
If anybody has this rag or can find it on the web maybe you can post it here???
Yes! I am an Infidel.
And proud of it!

The problem is that the comparisons are generally valid only for the type of build that the test is done on.  HRB did much of their "back-to-back" testing on John Sullivan's Dyna, which was 95" w/SE heads, flattops, and S&S 570 cams.  Similar 95" test mule for the Cycle World performance series.  The exhausts which did well with those builds would choke off a 124...

Besides, everyone knows the Thunder header is the best pipe out there, 2 into 1 or not!

seems a lot of guys I ride with think so. I could never spend the money on a t header because of the finish. All I've seen look like "Potty mouth" after a couple seasons.

Couple of us guys threw in for this a few years back on another forum, three pipes, do a search, you'll find it.....  Seems that rb exhaust was exposed in that test when everyone was screaming how great they were .  :smiled:

  Exposed ?

Yeah...no less intelligent than your post! :slap:

Robert

Intelligent comment, thank you.. :emoGroan:
Yeah cause they SUCK!

Could there ever be a clear cut winner? Unless you had the pipe designed for your exact motor the off shelf ones will all perform different for the bike they are on.

Does a pipe respond differently to a stock exhaust valve vs a larger one?

Just like every piece of the motor it's about the combination. I love my fatcat and don't ever plan to change it!

If anybody has this rag or can find it on the web maybe you can post it here???

I have 3 issues of the Cycle World, Power & Performance,  that say, retailers display until JAN 2, 2001, FEB 4, 2003 and FEB 3, 2004.

They all 3 had pipe comparisons/shout outs.

2001 issue pipe comparison was called, The Big Guns,  the pipes, the pipes are calling,  7 different 2-2 and 6 different 2-1 exhaust on a softail standard with 95in cylinders, air cleaner, 6200rpm ignition/coil and Thunderslide kit.

2003 issue, Shoot Out at the HD Corral, same 2000 softail now with SE performance heads, 211 cams, 42 Mikuni, 7000rom ignition/coil and plug wires. Compared 5, 2-2's and 2, 2-1's.

2004 issue,  Pipe Shout Out III, one conventional, one not.  2-2 Bub Rinehart and 2-1 F.A.I.C. on the same softail and also on a 103in Road King with HTCC heads, 260 cam and 51 CV.

These articles are 10-13 years old...outdated.  Paul Dean tried to get Cycle World to allow him to continue the annual HD P&P issues but no dice...would have been good had he been able to.  He retired last year,  more capable on or off the bike than most realize.   Rick

Maybe another thing to consider is that a Thunderheader, Fat Cat or whatever for a Softtail will be different than one for a Bagger or a Dyna.  If a Fat Cat won the shootout on a Softtail it doesn't mean it would win it on a different model bike, let alone a motor modified differently.  I have Fat Cats on a couple of bikes.  The Fat Boy pipe is way different than the one on my Streetglide.  Both do perform well but the engines are built quite differently.

Can you post the articles?  Or at least tell me how the 2-2 Bub Rineharts did?
