I have been informed I have inherited a 1977 Sportster Iron head from an old friend.  I havent seen this bike in a couple of years but It will arrive at my house in the next few weeks.  I have been told it still runs good but will not stay in first gear.  Not sure what im going to do with it, but I will fix the transmission and keep it.

sounds like a keeper,

might be a  bent shift fork or worn/rounded dogs.
on irons it easy to check.  take off primary, remove clutch pack.
4 bolts trans door.
remove drive sprocket from other side and whole tranny slips out in your hand.

pick up a manual.

I have a manual and a very good record of repairs from last several years.

Your about to have a keeper.
Everyone wants to change the world but, no one wants to change the toilet paper.

There is one shifting trick I use to keep mine from popping out of gear as it gets shifted. I rev the engine up right after shifting gears. That keeps it from popping out of first. Good luck.
