Just assembled oil pump on 94 engine rebuild. Nothing else is assembled inside the gearcase yet (cam/pinion etc.). Torqued oil pump mount screws to 90inch/pds. Feels like it has a "high spot". Its difficult to rotate the pump from inside cam chest (using the driven gear) for one complete revolution, until it breaks free and rotates fairly smooth for another 3/4 rotation. I used assembly lube. Is this acceptable or should it be hauled apart again?
Thanks, Flhfxd.

Loosen the pump and move it slightly either way and see if it frees up..if it does then re-torque.. if not, then I would say pull it and see where the bind is..just my opinion

Use only legit gaskets.  Don't crank the bolts down until the pump feels centered.  I spin it over a few times with the bolts snug, not tight. Also watch alignment so you don't expose the passage near the bottom or you will have a leak...

Well it looks like I got a bad torque wrench.  :banghead: I had it set at 90 inch/lbs (min spec from manual) but I'm certain it clicked quite a bit higher. Loosened up all the screws then used my "hand torque wrench" to re torque and now its all freed up the way its supposed to be.

It's certainly worth spending a few more dollars on a good quality inch/pounds torque wrench, as there are quite a number of fasteners on a Harley that won't stand over tightening. A snapped of bolt anywhere can ruin your day. It's also surprising the number of guys who read 12 inch/ponds in the manual & then get the big wrench out & set it to 12 foot/pounds! As we say here in Limeyland, a spanner is only as good as the mechanic using it. Glad it all worked out for ya FlhFxd. :bike:

I bought a desent Craftsman torque wrench quite a while ago and paid $100 for it but Im surprised it seems to consistantly over torque. Must be a POS I guess. As for the oil pump, I did also replace the shaft and keys and I didnt compare it to the original for lemgth. Now Im wondering if it might be just a tiny bit longer than the original. I admit, that was a bit of a bonehead move

You could always check your Craftsman  against a known good wrench, any old nut/bolt in a piece of steel will tell ya. I'm sure you know this, but always back off from the setting you used before putting it away. I learned that one the hard way!

FWIW, Checked my torque wrench and found it to be close to what its supposed to. So I took the whole pump apart again as it just didnt sit right with me. Found the oil seal behind the gear had pushed out of the bore just enough to press on the back of the gear after the screws were torqued in. Put in a new seal now its free like its supposed to be.
( see related thread, "oil seal lip install-in or out").
