2010 CVO convertible. Riding with a group yesterday, guys are telling my brake lights are stuck on
I unplugged the rear switch- still stuck on.  I then unplugged the front switch -  same thing.
Any suggestions as to what to check next?

karlc1955

I've been going thru the wiring diagrams, the wires to the rear lights also go thru the TSM/TSSM module
Could that be the culprit?

Make sure the bulb hasn't blown and the brake filament isn't just touching and getting power from the running light filament.

I pulled both of them  they both look good   thanks

Are the brake lights actually on, maybe they are saying that because the running lights are bright?

Check the shim in the handle bar housing

Do you have any fancy light module fitted?

Anything extra on the bike?  Double check wiring under the fender and under the seat.  The front switch isn't easily unplugged because they are hard wired in with the handle bar wiring, unless you unhooked the handlebar wiring plug.

Where how did you unplug the front switch?

at the handlebar wiring plug

Friend had a sporster which did the same thing.  Turned out to be the rear light socket.
Spread the tail light and brake light socket contacts apart since they were touching.

Buddy had an 09 softail night train. Brake light stuck on for a year after he put on a backrest. Finally took it to a harley mechanic and it was the rear brake switch. If you run it with the brake light always on they get hot and can melt the lens.

Hw did you check rear switch?
wasting time

I wish I could help you more on that but I didn't fix it. It is in the repair manual though.

joe_lyons

If you unplugged the switches then you have a short to power somewhere powering your brake lights.  The power for the brake lights does not go through the tssm but just sends the signal there also.

Make sure the brake relay in in the correct position and orientation.
Ignorance is bliss, and accuracy expensive. How much of either can you afford?

When was the last time you changed levers or handgrips, and did you shim the button on the front brake switch like the manual says?  I know you said you unplugged the wiring for the front switch, but just in case you are unplugging something else.

As a general rule, when something changes on the bike, go back to the last thing that was done to fix the problem.

Coyote

If you pull the brake relay, do the lights go out? I think you can also swap it with the start/run relay as a test as well.

My original rear brake switched failed on a 4500 mile ride last week with a little over 50k on the bike (2011). But it failed open so I had no brake light when I was on the rear brake. Only noticed it because I was snapping some photos with one hand, bike in cruise, and it did not drop out of cruise when I needed to slow down for a curve.  :dgust:
