Can anyone give me any advice on checking the oil?  Or should I just follow the routine as outlined in the Owner's Manual?

Which oil are you checking and what are you checking for?
If you have the proper owners manual, that is a good place to start...

sportsters and softails straight up

all others resting on kickstand
