A friend of mine is having problems with his 2000 Fatboy, and wants me to try and fix it.

He was riding last night, and they stopped for gas, then the bike wouldn't start. They push started it and started heading home, but as they kept going everything started going out on him......speedo stopped working, lights got very dim and went out, and the bike ended up dying. They had to trailer it home from there.

He said the battery is brand new, so that leads me to think it could be the regulator or maybe the stator.

I don't have a service manual for this bike, so I need to know what test procedure is for the regulator to see if that's the culprit. Or the stator if that is able to be tested as well.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Check the earth lead from the battery to the frame.
They can get very old and tired and corroded. It really could be something as simple as that.
Check other earth connections while you are there.

Sounds like some part of the charging system has failed..

Don't need a SM for that bike.. The one you have for yours should be close if you understand how they work.. Here is a universal test for most alternator based HD charging systems (post 1969).

I went out last night, and it started right up for me............no problem at all.
I have my battery tender hooked up to it to make sure the battery is fully charged. I'll do some testing later on today and see if I can isolate the problem.
Thanks for the link.

2000's are a bastard 1 year only charging system. 2 phase 32 amp. If it needs a stator or regulator, dump the whole system and put the 01-06 3 phase 38 amp on, all parts fit and work much better. Low speed charging is improved with the 3 phase system. I think cycle electric sells a kit, I just used h-d parts on  mine. Mike

AFAIK the 01 to 05 were all single phase.. 06 when 3 phase.. Stator changed in 02 but was still single phase.. The bastard year (2000) was really triplets, 99 to 01. Now CE has been making a 3 phase early on..

The 2000 Softails are a bastard year.

The crappy single phase stator was only used for one year, but it was also used for a couple of years in the Dyna, 99 and 00.

You are right in 01 they updated the stator when they started started adding fuel injection on the softails.. Dynas used the 32 amp alt until 04 when they added EFI to the options..

BUBBIE

SNIFF the lube behind the adjuster opening.(easier than the derby cover) Smell BURNT? IF not, it can be the V. regulator.

My 00 gave me problems but then I didn't change anything Out, but replaced using the Stock replacement parts... NO HTT back then. :hyst:
