Here is where I'm at, this is from the people selling me the tripod.

http://www.dennysantennaservice.com/TV_Antenna_system_Installation_.html

Scroll down to:

The installation order of things goes like this.
.
Each particular item comes with directions pertaining to assembly and installation.
.
Install the mount according to the type you have.

You may want to visit:
How to install a tripod mount

Then click How to Install A tripod Mount.

As you should be able to see, just drilling at random for the first hole would set that tripod off at some crazy angle.

Listen to the jingle the rumble and the roar.

My stud finder has a "deep" setting for such a thing.

What is the brand of your stud finder, and have you tried it on a roof to find rafters?

It's a Zircon http://www.zircon.com/  I haven't used it through shingles, but I've used it through some other thick materials and had it work.

I'm going to Home Cheapo tomorrow to buy an I 500.
1 1/2" penetration should work fine.

TRUCK how about put a 2x6 or 2x8 15"-151/2" lad flat
nail between the rafters you will need total of 3
one for each leg of the tripod
then nut and bolt thought the roof

This is your answer!!!!!!!     Then you can put it where you want it on the roof. Go up on the roof set up tri pod where you want it and drill holes where you want it. Then go in to attic and put some bracing (between rafters) where your holes are then bolt it or lag it down. It will be alot stronger because each lag or bolt will be connected to 2 trusses instead of just 1. Much stronger, much easier, and no extra holes from missing your guess.

Thanks for the ideas. If the stud finder fails me, and I don't think it will because I played with it on the roof yesterday and found some rafters, then I'll go with the long bolts.
