 Sometimes being in a hurry really bites you on the ass. Had to go into the 2001 Ultra's primary today to replace a leaking gasket and in the process of pulling the hex head primary cover bolts I didn't pay attention to what length was coming out of what hole (5 longs, 5 shorts). I tried to reverse engineer where I thought each went but I can't guarantee I got it 100 percent correct.
I figured someone on HTT would know right off the top of their head. So, looking at the  primary and using the upper left bolt as #1 and going to the right across the top of the primary, can anyone tell me the sequence for long and short bolts????
As always, your help is muchly appreciated.

There is a pic in the service manual, figure 6-43.

If you look at the thickness of the primary cover at each hole as you go it will show you whether you need a short or a long at that spot.
The top high one is a short but the one to the left of it is a long.  The depth of that area is hard to see.

Thanks 14Frisco for the diagram (my manual doesn't have the diagram showing each hole and bolt). I'll make a copy of yours and add it to mine.
Fleetmechanic, I did what you suggested but was still unsure I had things buttoned down correctly, hence my post.
Again, thanks to you both. Happy riding to ya!

ironpig9!   never having ever openned up the primary to replace seals before i used two cardboard boxes turned upside down to keep all the inner and outer primary bolts where they belong. i drew a rough outline of the inner primary case with bolt locations on the bottom of one box and  the outer primary case and bolt locations on the bottom of the other one. as the bolts come out they are placed in holes that were put in the cardboard with a sharp pencil. also have the the torque sequences numbered and specs written on the bottoms so i don't have to get the manual dirty!  not very fancy but has worked three times for me now!

The cardboard is a good idea---thanks :scoot:

Yep the cardboard drawings work really good.
