My 1975 xlch when I let it sit will leak oil out of the breather tube or some times it will spit out a bit when I first start after it sits for a week. Is the check ball in the oil pump the cause?

sounds right

Yep..and being an XLCH it probably don't have an oil filter...that aint helping any...
Change oil more often , also wouldn't hurt to flush the tank from time to time.

I have one of those drop in filters. It also will blow lots of blue smoke if I fill it all way full of oil. Never had a sporty till now totally different animal than the shovels I know

Hmmm, a CH with electric start!! OK
Well not even yer shovel should be filled completely with oil...never. Gotta leave a quite a bit of space really.
You didn't put oil in before starting and running it ? Did you?

Maddog

hate to tell you this but that's a XLH  not a CH,,   always leave some  air space in the oil tank,, Never fill it to the top,,they all drip out the breather tube its normal,
