i haven't changed the engine oil in my harley since i bought it and i was going to do it over the weekend but i've seen that you have to use a special wrench. i was wondering what i need/what you guys use?? i have a harley oil cooler so a strap wrench won't work.
also i was wondering if i need to put in any extra engine oil since i have the cooler on it??

That is what I have & looks just like the one in the service manual.

When you change the filter, change to the K&N oil filter with the nut on the end.  No more filter wrench issues and a little less mess.

I bought a regular cup type tool for a $1.98, like in the picture, and then hacksawed the slot myself.  But now I use the K&N  filters on the car, truck, SUV and H-D.

I too just took a regular cup tool I had around the shop that was the same size as alot of automotive filters and ground it down till it looked like the one shown above. Works good and still good to use on cars and trucks. Your oil amount should be whatever brings it up to the proper mark on your dipstick.

I use a 3/8" drive band type filter wrench (no handle), it works great. I would steer clear of the "bi-directional" type wrench like shown in most manuals, they slip like crazy on chrome filters.

I drill 2 holes in the end of the filter before taking it off.  6 o'clock and 12 o'clock position. , let oil drain out in one of those long funnels. , then not so much of a mess when removing filter.

another vote for the K&N,  it's just easier, no special tools...  even get em at the dealer...

A softtail should take 2.6 quarts w/o cooler. Oil drain on right side of bike so with plug pulled sit on bike and lean it to to the right to get old oil out. Run it and top off from there.
