I'm looking at two bikes.
Trying to decide which one is the better buy.

1990 Softail
Asking 5500
Custom paint, overall nice looking.
Engine has been replaced by a previous owner. He doesn't know why.
40k miles

1999 Softail
Asking 5000
Basically stock looking.
31k miles.
Has the non-black motor.

I kind of like the looks of the 90, but can't seem to justify the extra money.

Any comments, info?
I'm not a proctologist, but I know an asshole when I see one...

The 99 IMO,  More possibilities down the road and a smoother running bike.  The 90 will bite your hands after a while
If you have to stop and think about if it is right or wrong, Assume it is wrong.

It must be true,I read it on the internet.

Actually the 1990 and 1999 are both evos so vibration will be similar. The 1999 will have some minor updates.
But what do I know? I drive a party bus.

What year did they start using rubber mount on softails
Not sure if the 90 model is rubber or ridged mount. Just a thought :fish:
If it has tits or gears it will give you problems at some point!!

'99 - almost 10 yrs newer for same money... but buy which ever one lights your fire

can't really get a nice Harley any cheaper than this so hard to go wrong either way if both in good shape
Colorado Springs, CO.

No rubber mounted engines on any Softails. The Evo is solid mount and the Twin Cam "B" in the Softail came out in 2000 and is solid mount but has counter balance shafts in the engine

Yea,  brain fart.. forgot the softie's waited an extra year.  I would still go with the 99.  Newer and stock makes to case to make it your own.  Why buy someone else's project.  Make your own project.

Definitely the 99. 31K is nothing on an Evo and the later Evo's were the best. Besides, the 99 is the one least messed with which is more desirable as you don't know the quality of the work done to the 90. 5K for a nice original 99 ST with 30K miles is a very fair deal.

The 99 is the more refine EVO of the two but the 90's engine replacement may have been a late model reman too. Maybe a little sleuth work is in order. Some of the softail guys on the forum may have more info on other chassis or drive-line changes between the years. Check the model year technical forum stuff to see what was released each year as upgrades. I'm not too sure on the breathers (head or crankcase) but I understand the later engine had better crankcase castings.

As others have said, both sound like good buys if they have been well maintained. Good Luck on your choice.

The '99 has better sealed electrical controls on the handle bar, and electronic speedo, no cable to deal with.
How many miles overall on the '90?
If you see someone crying,
ask if it's because of their haircut

JamLazyAss

I decided to go with the 99.
It really is almost bone stock original, with 30k miles.

I'll post a picture next week when I get it.
Thanks for all the replies.
