Well I just received the package from Kutter with my CVO lower pods, will these work with the Harley detachable hardware? When I bought my lowers a few years back (used) they came with the detachable stuff, now while I'm waiting for the BT 6.5 speakers to get here I'm wondering if anyone has had issues getting the kit together or if I need to run out and get permanent hardware?

On a side note, with the OEM Harley pods you pretty much have to paint or they would look horrible. I've seen a few members post pictures of the Mutazu and fairing factory style and they look like the same texture as the Harley glove boxes. The smooth OEM CVO pods look like something you would get from fairing factory. I still need to find a local painter, or would anyone recommend rattlecan painting these since there kind of small and smooth? Harley has the vivid black for like $20 a can.

Nutz rattle canned a set that turned out really nice. I'm having mine hydro dipped.

If you trust yourself ( I don't know your abilities) I would rattle can them. Soak the cans in HOT water first and they spray nicer. FYI Vivid Black is just a black base with no other toner added...it is pure black.

hdrolling: I have my lowers attached with the quick detach hardware. Good thing I never really take them off; you'd have to remove the speakers every time you wanted to pull the lowers, due to the two screws in the bucket behind the speaker. BUT, simply put, yes- detachable hardware works just fine for the lowers.

Thanks Mike, just wanted to make sure the larger quick detach hardware wasn't going to interfere with the back of the speaker.

I think I'll attempt to rattle can, seen some good youtube vids that make it look pretty good when your done.

That would be perfect, did you use the harley brand rattle cans? If not do you remember what brand you used, does it match in the sunlight? With my bike showing the years it wouldn't have to match perfect but I don't want them to look out of place.

A little off topic but how well can you hear the speakers mounted down on the lowers?  I'm thinking about upgrading all of my speakers and adding 2 more on the lowers is interesting.

I used PPG Vivid Black/Clear, same as HD uses. It was applied with professional spray equipment that I use to paint bikes with. What do your grills look like?

Ah, I was going to say that's a hell of a rattle can job! I bought the CVO screens when I bought the pods from Kutter.

Just curious what they looked like. Would've though HD would have made them to match the bike so to speak.

As long as you run them with enough power you can hear them just fine. They need to be good speakers and they need to have power behind them just like lid speakers.  Titan II speakers would be my suggestion.

These are not my pics put to give you an idea of what you get from Harley unpainted, the grills and a painted set installed.

I spray painted mine gloss black. Looked good & worked well until I spilled a little gasoline on one while disconnecting the gas tank cross over line. Gas ate the paint right off. Oh well, they function just fine & I'm not that concerned about looks.

I'm in the process of rattle canning now, just finished the sanding and primer. Tomorrow I'll wet sand and let dry before I put a coat of paint down. I plan to take a few days and try to let it cure before putting the clear on. Lots of good videos of rattle can paint jobs online and seeing how small these parts are its worth a try for under $50.

I used rustoleum high gloss black, then once my 4 coats were applied let it dry for 2 - 3 days thoroughly.  Came back and scuffed with 0000 steel wool just to take the gloss off, wiped down, and tacked, then cleared with rustoleum clear.  Perfect match to vivid black.  I've had them on for well over 18 mos or so now and they still look like the rest of the bike, new.

to answer your question about the hardware, I used none of it that was included as it was all plastic.  I just got the original parts from HD which totaled about $20 for both lowers.

That's exactly what I have been using UN, waiting for my 2nd coat of black to dry before I apply my third.

How did they turn out?

I'm still waiting for the clear coat to dry, then have to wet sand and put mothers compound on and wax. Everything I've read before tackling the rattle can job said the hardest part is waiting for it to dry. Looking at the 6.5 BT speakers I'm curious how they will sound, they look tiny compared to the 7.1's!

So far the paint and clear on the pods look passable, but if you look close you can tell it's not professional. Orange peel here and there, hopefully after some wet sanding it won't be as noticeable but from the money I saved they will work either way. Seeing how well they do look I defiantly need to put my LED CVO clone tour pack lights off and paint the frame so its bends better, and maybe the mid frame heat deflectors?

I didn't paint them outside but did move them out the next day to help them dry after the paint dried for a day.

Here's one of the couple spots that has orange peel, the clear made it look worse. Hoping it will smooth out after the wet sanding.

Also installed the rear 7.1 pods, very nice quality! I did have to remove my Harley passenger armrests but the wife only really uses them on long trips, for those trips I can remove the 7.1's and put the hog tune pods back on so I can put the armrests back on for her. My hammock seat defiantly needed to be squeezed in!

Everything is in and wired up, the paint looks great and the detachable hardware worked fine. Thanks for the help with that.
Now, going from a 4 speaker 4 ohm setup with 180 watts RMS at 4ohms to an 8 speaker 2ohm 125 watts RMS(est) is noticeable to me. The highs are still there, but that bump that hits you in the chest is gone some what. I haven't tweaked anything in the head unit yet because I want to give the speakers a couple days riding to try to break them in a little. The over all "presence" of having 8 speakers is very nice, surrounded by music but not surround sound. I'll give it a month to see if I think I need to add a second BT 4180 amp but the initial impression is that I think I do. We'll see after some more play time.

So far I'm pretty happy with how the rattlecan paint job came out, there are a couple areas where if you get down and look close you can see them but to just walk around the bike they look and match perfect.
