Yeah I know, asking about a muffler is like asking synth or fossil, 9mm or .45 but.....

This is for a 12 EG, 103, Andrews 48s, PV tuner. I've got some old evo Rush touring mufflers behind a catless Jackpot 2-1-2. They are ok but there's a low freq resonance that just gets to me after a while. I tried different size baffles and repacking them, still not in love. At 100 miles it feels like pressure on the back of my head.

I've been reading back some and for a while lots of guys seem to like their Crusher Mellows, for those of you that have them are you still happy? Been wondering about those or the E series from Fuel Moto.

SE Fatshots or E series from FM. Think adjustable tone and back pressure.

My concern about an E series type pipe ...I never had one but it would seem to me the sound is directed sideways. Yes? would this affect the rider(s) more than exhaust directed straight back? I dunno. It isn't like you can borrow a set of mufflers for a demo run.

On a side note I could not imagine running real short drags every day.

My experience with sideways vs straight back. Had a Supertrapp Supermeg 2:1 on a couple of 103 Softails. Tried closed end (as supplied-15 to 20 discs) and their open end cap with 10 fewer discs. Despite losing the hissy fit BLATT BLATT the disc-only setup provides and slightly more overall deeper sound, I preferred the open end (like the SE Fatshotz design) because you run away from the noise.

The Fatshotz have a fine hole perforated and wrapped straight through core that cuts the high frequency rasp. Plus adding or subtracting discs (they come with 10 but Supertrapp sells more) allows some range of tuning both sound and back pressure.

And a bonus: They're stamped EPA approved! Which I assume they are if a Cat's still upstream filtering the sound.

I couldn't be happier with the mellows for touring. They are almost too quiet but sound great when pouring the power on. Id like to hear what the standard crusher sounds like.

I just put Mellows on and I love them.  Sound similar to my stock CVO cans with 1.57 fullsac cores until you get on it.  Then it barks louder than stock.

Installed the Crusher Mellows on my '09 CVO Ultra with V&H Powerdual head pipes about a 1,000 miles ago.  Very pleased with the tone and sound volume from idle to accelerating to cruising around.  Thinking of getting another set for my '95 RK with S&S 113.

I had a set of mellows mounted behind a power dual head pipe and powered by S&S 124" crate. Sound/tone was good with me, it was more of a "feeling" with them. They were deep and ground pounding but never loud. Nice and quiet at cruise and sexy rumble on the gas. Keep in mind it was a built motor though.

In comparison I have RH 4" slipons on my otherwise stick CVO 110 and I often feel like they are bothering my ears on a long ride, even though they are not loud?

Thanks guys. To me the Rush I have are not obnoxious or anything, I think it' just the pitch. Hell, earplugs might be the real answer for distance anyhow. I do see new Crusher Mellows with the Trident Tips on Amazon for $461. Still holding out.

Speaking of distance, a 'trapp with closed caps is a lot nicer if you pull a trailer IMO.

You can always purchase the Crushers with the standard baffles, and if they're too loud, order the mellow baffles separately.
From what I understand, the standard baffles are difficult to get by themselves.

I've had the Crushers w/standard baffles for the past several years; love the deep rumble and performance they provide; I sometimes wish they were a bit louder.

I have a few friends that have gone to the Freedom Performance slash-cuts recently... these pipes sound great at idle and drive-off, but relatively mild when cruising.

"Other than that, how'd you like the theater Mrs. Lincoln?"

Hossamania

I will second the Freedom Performance pipes. Good sound, good quality.

We always use earplugs on longer rides. Even freeway blasts for a short time. It really cuts down on the fatigue factor, mostly the wind noise more than exhaust. Take a little getting use to at first, hard to hear your motor for shift points, etc., but you get used to it pretty quick.
What takes more time is hearing your motor after you remove your earplugs. You will swear your motor is out of oil! You can hear every little click, whir, and rattle. Sounds like a paint can full of ball bearings being shaken.

I recently installed Crusher mellows on my new RK. To my ears, the sound is perfect - more rumbly and a just a  bit louder than stock but not harsh. I also like the looks of the trident tips. I've no desire to modify them at all.
Going down that long, lonesome highway. Gonna live life my way.

I swear by these.  They are a nice compromise, about the most comfy I've ever used, plus do not completely shut out the world.  They don't hurt your ear canals like cheapo's you see at gas stations and drug stores (which aren't cheap at $3-4/pair vs .20 cents/pr...)  I've been wearing ear plugs almost daily for years.

As Hossamania pointed out - Ear plugs quickly add about 10hp.

Those are the ones we use at work also. Very comfortable, work great.
And, since we use them at work and get them by the box full, I use them at home and riding.

Thread revival!

What I ended up with was a set of barely (like zero use) used Screaming Eagle touring Street Cannons, I got a good enough of a deal from a member here that I had to give them a try. Actually he was going to let me try them and ship them back if I didn't like them (beat that huh?).  I ran them for 20-30 miles but felt if I was going to give them a real honest shot I better pay up and take more time.

At speed they are fine, I don't get the resonating drone I had with the Rush. When I get on it they bark harder than I need (no cat) but that's not a deal breaker. The only thing I don't like is, regardless of throttle position when I let off to shift I get BLATT BLATT BLATT at every shift.  It's zero issue on the highway but it gets old on the two laners with the wife.

......  So when she forgets about these I'll look into something else.

I have 2 sets that I run on my 103 bikes, (mildly enhanced).
In fact, I've had the CVO with the Fullsac 1.75 cores since '09 and still run them on my '14.
When I pull my trailer, I use my stock mufflers that came with the bike with Fullsac 1.75 cores installed just because they work a little quieter when pulling the trailer.
I like the CVO style better than the stock style, thus the switch when trailer pulling.
My TTS tune is the same with either set, just a little different tone.
Works well for me and has since '09. I'm old but not deaf (yet).
Ride with a half helmet.

I have tried different mufflers over the years and keep going back to the same ones, stock! I am running a Fuel Moto Jackpot head pipe with stock mufflers on my 2010 and I still wear ear plugs. I can not stand the drone of an open muffler on the long haul, short trips are ok, but not running across country.

In fact, I run these. I hacked into my intercom wiring so I can hear the radio/CB/intercom over them.

I've been using them for years, and yes I can hear emergency vehicles just fine. I buy 200 pairs at a time, and I don't reuse them.

I've been using the old school Supertrapp internal disc mufflers. Nice deep sound really pretty quiet. 22 disc's, closed end cap. Since it has the tapered cones, the exhaust exits straight back rather than radially like the 4" external disc series. 12 FLHTK, 103.

flh canuck

I've used a number of mufflers over the years and my favorite by far are the SE Fatshotz.

Nice bark when you get on the throttle but pleasant, reasonably quiet rumble when cruising. When I traded in my 08 Electraglide, I kept the Fatshotz and they are now installed on my 13 Road King. As already stated, they are tuneable with the kit from Supertrapp.

Pretty sure you will be happy with these if you give them a try.
