Got a friend with a Ultima 6 speed overdrive that lost 6th. Is there a common failure that causes that?

Shifter pawl spring could be broken.  That would be my guess.  Try riding it and when in 5th plurality pressure on the shifter, Like you are down shifting, then see if it will go into 6th.

Thanks. I had the spring, pawl adjustment and possible fork issue on my list to give him. Thanks for confirming the most likely candidate.
Interesting spring diagnostic method.

If the spring is broke or weak it won't return the shifter enough to grab the next slot on the cam, which is why putting a little down pressure on the shifter before going into 6th might be enough to engage 6th.

FYI Ultima uses a stock style spring in there, so if you need to replace it I'd recommend OEM. I have a new one at the shop if you can't find one.

I can't do the repair in the time frame he wants so he's taking it to a local shop that deals with Ultima based choppers, which is what this is. 113, I believe.  I've passed on the possibles and the OEM spring recommendation . Thanks.
