the heads I had the problem with were '05 castings with stock beehive springs. To this dayI still think it was a heat related issue and something with the front exhaust valve seat because the tick was minimal, but there when cold.It got worse & alot louder when hot. This was with Andrews 26 cams. I could be off, but the seat didnt look like it was in the head all the way. I stopped the machinist short of installing new seats due to the amount of cash I had already sunk into the damn things & just installed my original '02 heads.

I have  NEVER heard of Parts made by the thousands and a FEW problem ones  showing up, stopping me from Buying/Using a Quality aftermarket part...

There will always be a few Bad ones.... NOT talking Hundreds with problems here....

I guess I'll stick with SE so I'll have someone to yell at if I get a bad set. All I need now is a pair of bolt cutters and some knowledge.

So you can remove the SEs if you screw up?

Now that i've read the whole thread, I'm still confused as to which pushrods to install in my '15 stock RK along with the S&S premium lifters. I'm looking for my dice. Or maybe I'll write them on slips of paper and pull one out of my genuine HD hat.

Jim,

I went back to the SE tapered push rods, no rubbing with them, the SB's were rubbing
where they entered the bottom of the push rod tube that extends into the head.

The SE's were easier for me to install also.

I'm also looking at S&S Quickies, since the lifter blocks don't need to be removed. The easier the better.

Make sure Valve to pushrod is in Closed position....

COVER THE CUTTER HEAD  with a Cloth... (i use the white cottons from Costco NOT my fine Micro Fibers) tho, old one would do the job.....

When you cut through using the cutter IT can Pop and Move  the head... WHEN you JUMP,,,, the towel will lessen the Blow to the surrounding parts....

Caution Jim, Caution...... :hyst:

Thanks Bubbie. There's an excellent YouTube video by J&P/S&S that emphasizes your same points. I think I'm good to go.

I would check the runout on those SE push rods.

OK another update hopefully getting to the end here.

We ordered the SE oil pump and a new set of S&S lifters.  We got
the bike buttoned up this afternoon and did another bench test.

Here is a shot of our old oil pump sitting beside the SE unit.

Now for the test, the lifters chattered for a few moments, I had them in oil for over
two days but it was not enough, they got quiet in a couple minutes after the startup.

Oil pressure at about 10 minutes after startup.

OK had a buddy show up in the middle of the test so I let her run to see how
the test would do, as you can see she idled quite a while but no noise out of
her I was really surprised.

But as you can see our oil gauge is again still showing low pressure (I'm starting
to doubt this oil gauge setup)

Here is our test with the bike fully warmed up, at no time did we have engine noise after
the initial chatter of the new lifters on the cold startup.

So tomorrow we will give her a good road test, we've been this far before
and thought we had this beat but we had fallen short on the road test.

clawdog60,

The SB's rubbed in one spot and the SE's were perfect with no rubs,
they are in the bike again.

Just for Information:

Using the SE oil pump and 10w60 moly...

I have not had my oil pressure under 18# at Idle when HOT on a Very Hot day (usually right at 20# by my Inaccurate HD gauge) and lots of 35-50 MPH back two lane roads..(110*)...
The High HOT and at cruise runs at 42/44 never under. Medium slow RPM cruise (35/40 mph using 3-4 gear), never under 30/35#...

You might want to get that Manual Gauge to see "IF"... :SM:

I'll tell you,

If she don't make any noise tomorrow I don't care what that little gauge shows :bike:.

What is funny we did a test with a real gauge last month and the new sending unit
with the old bike gauge was about the same, but we did not do a full at running
engine temp check, so maybe that is where it is falling down.

The real gauge in the fairing will be a spring job when we are getting her ready for
next year.

Thumper Buttercup

Well guys,

We got out for a very good ride, good oil pressure and no noise
at all.  At hot idle we had just over 18 psi today and never had
any ticking at all from the old girl.

I think we can finally put this one to bed.

Kim and I really want to thank everyone with the help on this one  .

And with her running and pulling so good....
now we need to improve the brakes :potstir:.

Did you replace the lifters with the pump or use the current Premium?

We went ahead and put in a new set, I was not messing around with the one thing
at a time.  Could have been just that front exhaust lifter but we were done working
on this.

We've got them bagged and tagged, I was going to pull the front exhaust lifter to check it out later.
