cam-lifters

I have a 81fxs i bought for my wife. it has original 21k miles. set for 20 years outta north dakota.
I am doing a top end on it and keeping it mainly stock...springs and guides will be changed and clearance for whatever cam...
What do you guys like for a cam change? I have other shovels. I have a nice used A grind from one of my other shovels. I have a nice used B grind outta my 80 model WG.
I have run them both over the years. I also have a woods W6S in my 80 shovel...
Never was a fan of the A grind ever kinda run outta steam. B grind was always a go to back in the day.
Dont really want to raise compression much... Dont want to do daul plug heads either. Any recommendations for lifters. I have run Jims Hydro solids before and velva touch. DO not want to run solids to keep noise down... Yes i have solids in 2 other shovels we own. Just trying to get different ideas for this little 80incher,lol! Thanks for any advice and help.Travis

I too have run Andrews 'A' and 'B' cams in the past. In my opinion the 'A' is a decent all around cam, the 'B' is more of a mid to top end cam. And works better with a touch more than stock compression. Truthfully I've run a lot of different cams in Shovel motors as when I was working on bikes daily the Evo had just came out, and lots of guys playing catch up with their Shovel bikes.

For a stock Shovel or lightly modified, small stroker, etc. the best cam I ever came across was the Leineweber L3S. After a pretty lengthy discussion with Jim Leineweber way back in the early 90's he convinced me to try the L3S. It pulls from the out of the gate and makes power as long as the motor can make power. Most Shovels that's 5,000 to 5,500 rpm. But most start to taper near that RPM.

The cam data below shows the L3S timing at 0.020" and 0.053" lift. Using the 0.053" timing allows you to compare to other cam manufacturers timing data. The wider LSA generally pushes the peak torque a bit higher in the RPM range, that would then include HP values as well. The lower overlap gives a good pull earlier in the RPM range.

Like all Leineweber cams the lobe ramps are fast acting and noisy with solid lifters. With hydraulics like you mentioned, Jim's or Velva Touch the cam is silent.

I installed the L3S in my 93" S&S long block. It just wasn't the right choice for that displacement putting my hot cyl pressure at over 205 psi. It was a stump puller for sure but restarts were a bear.
