Going to put my engine back together this week using .030 cometic head gaskets. Local shop said I have to use Permatex copper spray  on the gaskets or I could have problems down the road. Anyone using this or any other product on head gaskets?

Sonny S.

Cometic MLS gaskets get installed dry.

Big Dan

I installed mine dry, per Cometic's instructions. 20k on 'em so far with nary a problem.

one other nice thing about installing them dry is when you have to remove them again they come right off.

Coat 'em if you have to re-use them.

This is another opinion question as some builders like 'em dry and others like them sprayed with copper coat... Mine are copper coated and I wouldn't do them any other way... JMO...

I run an auto shop and have done many headgasket jobs with and without the spray but my techs usually preffer a spritz of copper spray....jmho

Used the copper spray and have 20,000 miles on the build.Think either way is fine but second build will have the spray also.

Sonny S.

Looks like either way is fine.
I've just always installed them dry because that's what Cometic says to do. I figure if I do what they say and have a problem then it ain't on me.

From Cometic web site....

" Why does Cometic recommend MLS gaskets to be installed dry?
Cometic Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) head gaskets go on dry because they are coated with a sealant. Each MLS head gasket is coated with a .001" thick viton rubber that is bonded to the outer stainless steel layers. Adding an additional sealer can hinder the performance of an MLS head gasket.  "

come on, Sonny real men don't need no stinking directions.  LOL.

LOL
Hey, I had to read them when I finished to make sure I did it right  :teeth:

I don't put anything on the head gaskets but I do put permitex around the alignment dowels that go between the jugs and the heads.  I put the permitex on in the dowel holes rather than on the dowels themselves.
