I have the same problem with the clutch cable retaining ring. Haven't found a good tool for it yet. Interested in the forthcoming answers.
go to your neighborhood tattoo or piercing shop, they have a tool small enough I think that will work for ya Hoss, used for belly bands...  :nix:
and ....NO I don't have any piercings  :slap:

No, I'm not talking about the small clip on the hand control, I mean the large one under the the tranny cover that holds the three throw-out balls in place.
I have one for the clutch handle and my belly button piercing hardware.

then get one with the right angled ends, it's then easy peasy

When you get to the point of being completely fed-up with retaining ring pliers slipping out of the ring just before its spread or compressed enough to be removed and ruining $10 clutch rings, the expensive Knipex pliers will seem worth every penny. http://www.knipex.com/index.php?id=1216&L=1&page=group_detail&parentID=&groupID=1454

I use regular snap ring pliers for regular jobs.  But when I get to the huge snap ring that holds in the tranny main bearing I use the HI-TECH Model 87 retaining ring tool.  I also use this when I replace the snap ring spacer for the Timken bearing races (in conjunction with the JIMS 1710).
