We have a big local Sunday morning hang out here. After walking by about 300 to 500 bikes I could not find one evo touring bike. Then I checked Craigs list in five states and only found 3 Evo touring bikes for sale and lots and lots of twin cams. So If the people are not selling them and not riding them, where are they ?

Probably sitting in peoples garages rotting away.

I heard they make good choppers   :smileo:

Hey, i'm doing my part.  Have an 85 FXEF and a 91 Bagger.  I have no use for any of the newer stuff.

Mark

PaJoe

We put on about 10,000 miles a year on our '90  flhtcu but you probably won't see it parked at too many meets or dealers, nor in some company parking lot. You may unknowingly pass us out on the road or maybe see us waiting at a red light. You may see it in a parking lot of some smorgasboard or restaurant. It's possible there are others like us that love to ride but don't hang out at the usual Harley spots. When we first start riding the Harley we did try a few of the usual get together type things , but soon realized the time we spent would be better enjoyed actually riding. We don't go anywhere special, and have no big stories to tell afterwards, but my wife and I enjoy it and that is what matters most to us. I am not saying it is right or wrong, just maybe different, but perhaps there are few others with older evo touring bikes that feel the same way.

Norton Commando

I have a '90 FLHS that gets ridden some 8,000 miles a year, and like PapaJoe, you won't see me at any of the typical Harley spots either.
Remember, you can sleep in your car, but you can't drive your house.

rad3766

I dont get to ride as much as Id like, so when I do its "Screw it, lets ride" not "Screw it, lets sit in the parking lot."   :potstir:

Mine's sitting in the garage as we've had 3 blizzards in the past 2 weeks and received over 3 feet of snow.
Goin' to be a real nice spring!! That is if it ever gets here.....

IBARider

I know what ya mean.  I used to like the bike events just to check out the old shovels and pans... sheesh,  can't hardly even find an evo anymore so i don't go anymore either.... They must be sitting in garages....
It slid 112 feet and I had no road rash

98flstc

Mine is in the garage waiting for the weekend.  Maybe I'll run up to the Stealer on Saturday morning and park with the twinkies and their hot dog & popcorn eating owners.

I ride mine the weekends (the only time I'm in town).  98 FLHR.

pappyfreebird

whats n evo??? me n my shovels still look fer pans...wahahahahahaa
i did break down n git me a couch glide but shes ol too 94 ultra,,like bran new thou...but it do sit cause i ride my shovel,,but ifn wanna jam sum tunes i take the couch out...wont be long here either n we ll in the wind again

stroker800

The reason you don,t see evos on the road is the the stealership won,t carry parts for them anymore ...So there are these nice evos at home needing plugs and filters,,OR,, maybe the TC riders are thinking they are not reliable kinda like the AMF shovels and went to the bone yard,,OR,,maybe if they are stored indoors for the next 50 years their value with increase like the knuck ,,,so hear are my ideas,,Ihave to ride mine this year as only push botton bike I have.

So. Fla. seems to be the mecca for Evo rebuilds. When these 3 are done,it will be a total of 11 Evo rebuilds that have come through my doors in the last 2 months. And there are still 2 more on the appointment list.

My 80" evo is sitting inside a big cardboard box that says "S&S" on it.    :smilep:

FSG

John, considering the GFC everybody should be so busy and with 2 waiting and a   you're obviously not complaining.

What is that cam cone cover on the near engine, anything special ?

jsachs1

That motor is a "S&S Evo-retro 79" that fits in a Pan or Shovel frame(shorter by way of stroke, and tilted so it clears the seat post). The motor just got here from Daytona today.I talked to Jody A. at S&S the other day,and he said they still had some parts for them.It has factory Evo heads.Nosecone is early S&S cast, with a Dyna S ign.Customer says kick start only.
Business is very good.Don't forget we have year round riding here in paradise.

I let mine eat as much as weather will allow and weekend runs. I have gone to some weekday twinkie conventions, but they sell beer  in the parking lot and my bike is easy find in a sea of twin cams

Of course not...the Evo isn't really old iron, it is just old now.  But it is the engine that made Harleys 100,000 mile bikes.  In the early 90's I was asking the same question about shovelheads.  You couldn't find one.

My 86 is my commuting ride and long tour machine.  Once I get the V-Rod modified, it will take over those duties.

I can't really profile with the panhead since it isn't a rat bike and it isn't a trailer queen.  It is overdue a refresh, maybe after the V is done...

lengbyroadking

My old 87 FLT went through the conversion to the Roadking look and new paint a few years back. She gets anywhere from 4000 to 9000 miles on her each summer (northern MN summer). We enjoy the long rides, not the bar to bar trips. In the winter she gets put away under cover and doesn't see sun again until the rain has washed enough sand and salt off the roads to make riding fun. During the cold winter months, we just sit around and talk about last summer's trips and look forward to those to come.

Boatsteve

Mine is a 1995 EVO Tour Glide Classic, the one with the fixed faring, HD dealers do not have many parts after market and eBay are places to find parts Most of my add on chrome is used off eBay. I here the 2009 is the last of the fixed fairings! I ride on the weekends all my friends have twincams. But their all broke and I am not I like the old bike and I will continue to ride, some day maybe I will find an old pan head to restore! :potstir:
Mostly into Boats, but had to buy a Harley

92Fatty

I did 200+ miles today riding alongside 4 Twinkies. If I was to pick up another bike it will be a 92 ultra. EVO's Rule IMHO!!!!

evo's are known as the most reliable HD's , ....that's why I keep mine , and why we see a lot of these bikes here on the road.

Put about a grand in parts on the old girl this spring. Nothing that would have kept me from riding, just new tires, CV carb swap, plugs and wires and numerous other things. Planning a ride to Sturgis next month and from there to Oklahoma and then back to MN. Should be about 4000 miles round trip. I wouldn't trade her for anything.

takwolf

I have a '97 Dyna Convertible, most reliable bike I've ever owned, not hard to work on, I've cross referenced everything, oil filters, spark plugs, light bulbs. So, I don't care if H-D stocks parts, most aftermarket are better and cheaper anyway. I am thinking of putting in a better mid-range cam, and looking at that Ultima 6-speed gearset.

WE were out yesterday guy with a 09 street glide dealer installed stage 1 kit was bragging about how many bikes he had beat. another guy took his 1988 80 inch classic with branch head`s mik 42 ev27 and kicked his butt. then the guy with the 09 said you can`t beat me on top end I got a 6 speed they ran, same result`s I don`t think he will be calling out too many more evo`s
If it don`t scare you, It ain`t fast enough.

I've got an 95 Road King, one of the best bikes I have ever owned. I also have an 06 Road King and an 07 Ultra, and those are great bikes too.
I've had shovels , pans, ironheads, Triumph, Norton, BSA, and several different Ja-pans when I raced dirt, and they were great, hell I love em all.

Alot of nice Evo's showing up, gotta luv it. I ride mine everyday to work and run on weekends with some long time bikers and my 97 is the newest of the group - 3 Shovels and 2 Evos, we run hard all day , my stroked Cadillac as they call it, has no choice with this group but heavy throttle.
Neat thing about it, one of the Shovels is a 71 origional appearing white Super Glide (big stroker) runs all day, makes you feel special when you fire up healthy older bikes surrounded by 100 Twinkies at stops. Not trying to take away from this thread but man does that Super Glide draw a crowd, the owner simply says (ain't that the ugliest bike you have ever seen)

Can't get pics transfered over of my bike

I still use my 1996 WG for a daily commuter. Only problem is Al Gores global warming is bringing me cold rainy days 5 out of 7 here in SE Wisconsin. It has to be the coldest summer in history around here. Now its supposed to rain and be under average temps for the next 5 days!!! AAAAAARGH

Mine is sitting waiting for me to put it on the road.Too busy fixxing other bikes and test riding them.Just got done doing a Twinkie with a 114 inch big bore kit and have to break it in.

hd06myway

I put 124k mi on my '89 Softail, before trading her in.  That' sone bullet proof motor, no moving parts inside that can break like the TC, but I love my counter balanced '06 Softie with the stiffer frame and better shocks, it's just a better ride, but I'm not convinced yet it'll give me as many care free miles as my Evo, which made me forget about my old Shovel in no time.  Strangly, I miss the Shovel now, wish I still had one as a 2nd bike.
