The thin spigot is only there for the piston skirt to run on, the rings don't run down that far. I would be more worried about the crank shifting then cylinder failure.

Might be interesting to see what the spigot does when clamped in a torque plate

If it doesn't really move....maybe these will hold up

John, they do move. You can torque them down and hone em round just fine. Then, take the plates
off and put them back on, rinse and repeat. They get all kinda outa whack where the parting surface is.
(Not so much the spigot itself, but about 2" up from the bottom.)

That's been my experience anyway. Your mileage may vary.

I agree. They definitely move.

I want to know what happened to this one that you decided to cut it in half?

This cylinder half was sent to me by a friend of mine at Screamin' Eagle.

Your experience?
How many of these new steel liner cylinders have you torque plated and honed?

Enough to know that I won't do any more like that.

Wes, I'm curious.

As these cylinders are 4140, the technology isn't new.
Are you able to advise the material used for the rings please? Is is cast iron?

Does the factory suggest a particular procedure for the fitting of the rings?

Still none of the cylinder and piston kits available in Australia. I have one on order.
cheers,
richo

Are his initials TN by any chance?
If you don't have a sense of humor you probably have no sense at all.

So the liner is 4140, I was wondering all along what they are using. I thought maybe they were using CGI material. I've seen 4140 used in high performance diesel engines but I didn't think the longevity was there.

so you honed  a drop in 117 cylinder with tq plates? why ?

I have 117 kit  in a tq plate right now and they are =/-.0002 in and out..   at the spigot.. In fact I put them in three sets of plates Aluminum, Kent bore steel kit that we bored to use on larger cylinders and the plate kit that Randy from hyper made me.. the  special plates at this point does not seem to matter ..

Thanks Wes ,

Tattoo

as of today we have done 22 110" kits and 5 117" kits we have several of both kits in Florida  right now for bike week. My service writer has pounded on his 110" kit for over a 1000 miles with no issues and we are getting good feedback from Florida as well. If anything changes I will let everyone on this forum know with the details and this is the only forum I am on so you guys will be the first to know.

Thanks, Tattoo.  Everyone's waiting to hear about the life testing of the magic kit.  The challenge is that it's probably going to take at least 35K miles for us high-mileage riders to see if the kit is a good fit.

Thanks for the info and pictures on these kits and thank you for any updates you might have on issues if any arise. and if your dealer ship wanted to lend me a bike with one of these kits in it to test it I can run it for 40k hard miles then return it to you for inspection and I wont even charge you for the testing or for the plane flight to pick it up.  :SM:   :pop:

A local shop brought them in b/c they were scratched all to h3ll

MCE just would like to know if these cylinders can be hone the same way as the regular ones. Also what hone did you use to clean them up.

Buglet

GMR did you happen to check the cylinders without the TQ plate to see how far out there where.

I have checked them in and out of plates,  heated and not.
Hope the work better than they measure.
I used 6061-T6  1" on the bottom and a head bolted on top with stock head studs and bolts. They were out before the preload and just as bad after

Let them stay in the plates and heated and cooled them.
By golly they changed again.

Good stuff.. How did you heat em?

I have a lab oven, good heat conformity.
250°F for 2 hours.
What is your take on the numbers?
