My buddy Jimmy sent me this pic tonight.

He's putting together a Sporty flat tracker. I need to go see it next weekend, looks really bomb to me.      :chop:

Who said it was a 750?

I think he is referring to legal motor size for competition.

Only competition this will see is dirt drags.....

Here's JB's other dirt bike, and a few trophies....  another HTT guy in this pic, that will remain nameless....        :smilep:

JB is another life long friend, that I don't get to see enough of....    gonna change that this summer.

Jimmy got the new Rat Racer out this weekend, we had a blast at the field meet. I found out something about the frame, it's made by a guy named Mert Lawwill, I'm sure some of you know that name. Supposedly this frame was a very short run of production, twenty was what I heard Sunday.

Stock CID Gary, has head work and Andrews Y cams, S&S E. It really needs to go on the dyno to get dialed in. It was breaking up a bit yesterday at high RPM. He ran it with a rear knobby yesterday, but will put a street tire on it this week to run in the street tire class. Frame is a Mert Lawwill design and build.

I didn't catch this on first view, but...

What is the deal with the orange bike? TWO tires on the back? Whoa!

My buddy Dennis has a Lawmills built street flat tracker, Dennis use to be a Pro Rider couple decades ago.  great bike to ride.

So how is that set up? Looks like the chain is going between the two wheels. Is the wheel on the left offset to the left and the one on the right in the center of the frame? Or are the two wheels offset equil and the frame and he somehow moved the the engine to the right to get the chain in the middle? Sorry for the questions, never seen anything like this and am real curious.

Wheels are centered with the frame, chain is between the two wheels. Motor did not move.

JW113

OK, now I'm totally confused!

If it only had one wheel in the back like a normal bike, it would be centered in the frame and the chain on the right side of it. If both wheels are centered, and the chain is between the two wheels, doesn't the chain need to move to the centerline of the swingarm somehow???

Hey if you ever get the chance, can you post some pics of how this is set up. i.e. close ups of the rear wheels & stuff. Damned thing I ever heard of!

thanks,

2 wheels like that isn't going to work worth a flying e. When you lean the bike the center of gravity is going to shift to the outside and fight turning.

Dirt drag bikes don't turn much....   sooo.....   the trophy's say it works for him.

Ohio HD

No race trophy's yesterday, but Jimmy did get a 2nd place in show with his '77 Sporty at the Brother Hood field meet. One of his seven Sportsters.

I can't figure out what's going on as far as what kind of competition...dirt drags?  The bike with dual rear wheels has street rubber on it.  :nix:  The Lawwill frame bike has a swingarm that is way longer than a flat track arm,  fudging towards hill climb set-up.  Forward foot pegs with a shifter hanging in mid air nowhere near the pegs,  maybe just runs one gear?  All looks a bit strange to me.

garyajaz

when first saw pix I thinking longish swing arm.
is why I asked bout motor mods.
like the busa's with extended arms for drag racing??
but sure, for dirt drags its fine.
and tires? yeah, knob class vs non  knob.

bike looks perfect for its intended use. and it is still street able.
the pegs and shifter I cant see reason for other than personal preference.
would think for drags rear sets would be better. but hell guy looks old so he may have some physical issues that works for.
notice his drag bike set up same way.
either way. trophy's say it all.

something is going right for him.
good to see him keeping old iron alive.

yeah I looked into the ol mert bikes with dual carbs and his frame long ago..
I liked it for the ultimate street tracker.
but the $$$ to buy one was a bit high.

Oh its a drag bike not a street bike!
The headlight and tail lights and beenie helmet threw me off.
I think if he won those trophies with that bike, they are show trophies not race trophies.

Yeah Gary he was waiting on a street style tire he ordered, but wanted to run the bike, so threw a knobby on he had. That off road tire class is tough, and hard for a street type bike to do well. He has a trials type tire on now, and will run that next go round in August in the street tire class. None of this is serious for most there, it's fun.
