I am working a construction site where we all park at a Walmart (in the back parking lot) and are bussed 10 minutes to the job where there is no place to park. I want a cable to lock my bikes rear wheel to a sign or light post. I have looked online and read lots of reviews but still not sure what I want. I want a 6 foot or longer cable with either an integral lock or loops so I can use my own lock. Covered so as to not scratch/damage the bike. I would like the cable to be 5/8ths or so?

I would prefer something you or a friend has personally owned or used or at least seen in person. So anyone have any recommendations? I would like to ride to work!

Thanks!

This is what we used when I lived up in the Bawstun area back in the day..

I use a Kryptonite cable lock, but it is NOT looped on both ends.  If you decide to go with a Kryptonite, be sure and get the version that uses a flat key.  They had a lot of trouble with the barrel key lock type being real easy to hack.  Kryptonite DOES sell a double loop in 7 foot length.  http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/2790/i/kryptonite-kryptoflex-looped-cables?SITEID=Google+SEARCH+NON-BRAND+Product+Level+Ads+-+Google+Shopping+Campaign&P_ID=1327457399&adpos=1o5&creative=93111299933&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=COCypKP8r8wCFZNbhgodWAYA6g

I have this Kryptonite cable lock. When I worked for IR I could get HUGE discounts, as we owned Kryptonite. But they are good locks.

If interested in a chain style, this is pretty healthy too.

There isn't a cable or chain in existence that will make your bike theft-proof.

Thieves carry battery powered cut-off wheels that will go through any cable or chain in under 30 seconds.

My advice would be if this is really any area where the bike may be a target for thieves is to leave it home & drive your car (or make sure the bike is heavily insured)

Another theft deterrent is a bike cover that says Honda on it......

Cables, locks, garage doors, dogs, aren't meant for professional thieves. They of course get past them. But they will stop dumb drunk kids. There are more of them out there than professional thieves.

My last bike was stolen out of my locked shed :(!  I am just looking to keep the amateurs from easily lifting it into/onto a trailer or truck! I know nothing is thief proof but a lot of the stuff looks easily defeated? Thanks for the links I'll look into them.

My last bike had a nice thick Kryptonite cable lock with a barrel key. It served me well in my travels. It was in my saddlebag when they took it!

Full coverage insurance, and don't worry about it.
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!

Besides a good cable lock (I like it locked to the frame) I like the idea of a bike cover to hide the make of the bike. But if thieves see your bike parked at the same location everyday, they are going to know the length of time they have to steal your bike. Can't win can you? There must be a place at the construction site that you can park your bike, that's not in the way. My buddy always finds a place to park his bike at a construction site.

Get a cheap bike to ride to work.
Or ride the Harley, leave nothing in the bags, insure it well, park next to one that's nicer than yours, dont sweat it.

This has become the tool of choice for thieves. If you know others driving cars can they block you in? Also check with wal mart to see if security cameras cover your parking area.

I've got one of those big ol 1" thick Harley branded cables thats made by Kryptonite. It has the built in lock on one end of it, & uses a flat style key. I take it with me on road trips & use it. It's heavy, & a thief is going to have to work a little to get thru it. I use it in combination with 2 disc locks when staying at hotels. The longer it takes a thief to get thru these the better my chances are for catching them. I figure they're gonna have to make some noise while getting thru these locks & draw some attention to themselves. The more locks the better. Some thieves will just say screw it & walk away if they see its gonna be too much work. Remember,  they're thieves that are too lazy to go out & get a real job. Either way, if they want you bike bad enough, they're gonna get it.

I'm lucky I guess.  Have not had the need to lock my bikes..  So sad..

Wife rides a 750 Honda Ace.  I have an 05 Flhtci.  We both own non-descript lightweight nameless covers.  When we travel, we try to park as close to our motel room as we can.  I use a Kryptonite cable and go through my frame and front tire to her engine guard.  Her Lighter weight Kryptonite goes from her frame to mine.  Both bikes get covered with the cheapo covers, and a ski cable lock through the eyelets on the cover and her frame, Ski cable lock through my cover and front wheel.  Both bikes are well insured and over 10 years old. Also found one of those cheapo motel door alarms that I can set on the seat of my bike and down to the jiffy stand/pavement.  Anyone stupid enough to try to get two covers off, screw with a cheap alarm blasting and fight through 2 Kryptonite cables to grab a 11 year old Harley and a 13 year old Honda just isn't right in the head.

I have told the story before, but may as well again,

Staying at a motel in Rapid City, during the rally, one morning I walked out of my motel room and a guy walks up to me and asks if saw or heard anything during the night. He had a nice tow behind trailer that was chained up to a column and it was gone. The chain and lock was till laying there, cut through with a high speed grinder. This happened right out in front of his motel room. I suppose with all the AC units running nobody heard the grinder run for the couple seconds to took to cut the lock off.

Any lock can be cut off in a couple seconds with a battery powered high speed grinder. I lock might stop the lazy thief, but the determined thief will get your bike.

My 01 fxd had the Hd Alarm with the pager, no siren. I had the bike in a friends shed. 2 guys tried to get into the shed an the the pager went off. They didn't get the bike.......

Mark,

I used to have a Cobralink years ago. Very heavy and almost indestructible. Don't know if they are even available anymore though. Check out the link.

I got a real nice cable lock (about .625") from LOWES for 16.95.compairable to 70.00+ "MC" cable locks, its a good deterrent. most places where a lot of bike go,as long as its locked, they wont mess with it,two or three right next to them with the ignitions not locked that they can just start & ride off

wholehog

most of these walmarts are set up the same.....can you park back by the auto service area where they can keep an eye on it for some donuts or beer?

I worked construction. Try talking to the General/Suoer. A lot of times those guys are riders and let you park next to the trailer. The problem with locking the bike is if they want it bad enuf they will get it. Walmart has a lot of video but try to look at it. Besides, it may not help ID the thieves. Insurance is the best bet but even that can be a pain and not always 100%. As said, if they notice a regular pattern, bad. But also a lot of thefts are just simply opportunity.
