I have a custom tank on my 72 that says to use a E82-96 Cap, I have been trying to get answers from HD Tech about which cap I need 63133-10A 63139-10A or 61100006A they tell me they are all the same size ? How come all the different part numbers ? WTF, they are all the same looking cap, they are special order and I don't want to order the wrong one and be stuck with it at $85.00 can anyone please help me with this, do I get a Sportster cap a Softail cap ?  thanks guys I appreciate any help. :banghead:

If your tank manufacturer says to use an early screw in cap, then it is vented in both directions and it's what you must use. Later screw in caps (XL or Softail right side) are "vented in" only.  If dealer orders you the wrong one - it's on them....

Just a thought here.......take the bike to the dealer, get him to try the cap that he says what will work.......leave happy.

My tank is vented, is the cap diameter the same on all Harley and aftermarket with the screw in
cap ?
I tried my old cap on their new bike tanks and it goes right in, but I didn't tighten it just fit it.

Dealer does not have the caps in stock so I need to order one but thats my issue for fitament, I will see if I can return if it does not fit/seal

Ask him if you can try a cap off of one of the bikes in his show room.. If it fits, buy that one.. Bike doesn't have to be new.. Late model used should lead you to something that will fit if dealer don't want you messing with a new bike..

Later gas caps only vent inward. Pressure vents through tube at filler neck to bottom of tank then out through a plastic tube/check valve. Most real late ones pressure vent through nipple at top of tank then through plastic gizzmo...   "Most" aftermarket custom tanks require a cap that vents in both directions...ie: the early screw type.

You are right but I thought the 82-96 only vented one way.. I started using a bayonet twist lock cap with a one way vent on my bobber.. It's nice cuz it don't leak when the tank is full... It will hiss a little when popping for filling..

Does that matter if the tank is vented?

remember the old flat sides had right hand  thread cap on the right tank and left hand thread on the left tank,, and I believe the right one was vented,, so that is probably the one you want
