The shift lever on my fxr trans is pretty sloppy, bolt is tight, should I pull the inner and check/replace?

The slop could be a number of places:

-foor shifter
-tube
-shifter arm (through primary case)
-linkage
-lever on transmission
-bushing in trans for pawl
-excessive side play in the drum
-worn pins on forks
-worn forks
-worn slots in gears (For forks).

All but the bushing in the case, gears, and shifter arm can be dealt with without removing the inner primary.

In my case it was the shift arm into the trans. I made sure the bolt was tight, but it was still quite loose. That's why I chose to replace it before it died on me down some road somewhere.

IF you can cut it off the shaft at tranny, there is a Pricy Two Piece replacement for it... Making it EASY PEASY

The trans shifter arm is a high failure part. Make sure the arm stays tight on the pawl shaft. Prolonged operation with a loose arm wears the shaft spline so a new arm will not tighten down properly. The gearset has to be removed from the case to replace the pawl. I would be more than hesitant to try a 2 piece arm. In fact I would not install one on your bike if you asked me. If the factory arm won't hold up a 2 piece arm is nothing but a temporary bandaid to get out of a jam. This is also likely to tear up the pawl shaft faster than a loose stock arm.
