Tire replacement for 01 FXD

It has bee a while since my last post, but I am needing new tires for my old 01 FXD Dyna and I would like to see what the prevailing wisdom for a near stock replacement. Thanks.

Dunlop American Elite made in USA for an all around current OEM upgrade replacement.

Avon Cobra made in England for probably the most grip of any cruiser tire and just a little less mileage.  My favorite.

Michelin Commander II made Thailand for the most mileage (almost double),  ok dry grip,  poor wet grip.

I like the AE MU series on my 01 FLHT   Got a spacer from Phil to get enough clearance.  Coming upon 5,000 mi and all is good

Nothing wrong with stock Dunlop or move to the Dunlop American Elite

Thanks for all of the input. I have always used the stock Dunlop tires, bike only has 65K miles as my riding has fallen off, and I have developed a wobble at 45 for the second time. The last time was in 2006. This time my tires are pretty old (just not many miles) I thought replacements would be advisable, last time this happened I replaced (or rather had replaced) the head tube bearing and race-there was some pitting when I disassembled to grease- along with the front tire. Just some background, I've had the bike since new and do the basic service myself, had gotten away from the dealers but the independent I used passed away and I guess I'll be heading back to local dealer to fix this, maybe new tires and an adjustment will fix it. Thanks.

The tread pattern Dunlop uses on D401, D402, K591 Harley tires is basically from the 1980's and is more prone to track irregularities.  Casing also tends to not be as stabile as Dunlop's premium offerings.  These tires often contribute to handling issues.  A lot of riders have figured this out.  -Rick

American Elites or comparable for me. 402s and 401s just don't cut it anymore. If you ride a lot of miles you know what I'm talking about.

I have Dunlop K591's on my wife's 2011 SuperGlide Custom and never felt that she had handling issues. In fact those tires were stock on her 07 Dyna LowRider and the Michelin Scorcher tires were stock on the 2011 Dyna. When those wore out I put the K591's on it.

I noticed the last time I bought American Elites for my 2013 StreetGlide that the American Elites are now available in sizes for her Dyna. The cost was only about $25 or so more than the K591's on line which means I will probably switch hers over at next tire change.

Pretty much every wobble issue I have had was related to tires, so changing tires is probably a good idea.

I've been running Avon Roadrider AM26 front and rear for the last 4-5 years. They are superior in every way to stock 401's and have outlasted the 401 by a wide margin. This is on my 01Dyna. They are in need of replacement now with 28K on the front and 20K on the rear. I ran thru 4 591's back a few years ago, getting from 8-10K at most, while 401 rear was treacherous in rain, 404 also nasty in wet. The Avon Am26 works far better imo and outlasts them all.  fwiw Buffalo

I may have mentioned this to you before but Avon does not recommend the Roadrider on Harleys even though the load rating can be, or is the same.  They say that model is for middleweight bikes.  Avon had a knowledgeable rep that I really liked tell me the same thing,  even though he wasn't a stickler for following all the rules for rim sizes.  I purchased a front Roadrider (for $38) prior to him telling me this,  it's on the bike now and feels fine...not quite a Cobra.  He understood how I ride so that may have played a part in his suggestion.

Buffalo,  I couldn't get that kind of mileage if I rolled the bike straight...........on carpet.  -Rick

The last set i had were  were also my favorites, Avon venoms. I dont know if they still make them.

Cobra is very similar casing to Venom with tread redesigned to improve steering,  which it does real well and reduce noise when cornering.

I installed Michelin Commander II's on my 2001 FXD and will never put anything else on.

Ive had two sets of OE Dunlops and couldn't deal with the road wander anymore. 

Go Michelin and dont look back!

I put AE3's on my RK and Ultra this spring. I really like them, on the King they work better through sweepers than the original Dunlops, and I'm sure they will last a little longer. Ran stocks on that for 100,000 miles, so I will be able to tell exactly how different they run. On the Ultra they work well, same good grip through corners, actually find myself oversteering often.
Seem to work well in the rain.
Not really worried about getting extra wear out of them, though that would be nice, more interested in how they handle after half worn, stock Dunlops started to get a bit greasy feeling half worn, much worse toward end.
Can't say how they will work on the smaller Dyna, but I suspect they would be fine.
I wouldn't have a problem putting Avons on, always hear of great grip with them. Only unknown to me is how fast they wear.
