The fairing brackets were broken and repaired by the previous owner with sturdy "L" brackets and good hardware.

But they broke again, this time in a different place, right next to the radio. Cracked almost all the way through, a clean break. I am of course going to replace them with the newer style. But my question is:

What caused THIS break? Just vibration?

The previous owner lowered the bike, front and rear and installed shorter stiffer springs up front. Could the stiffer ride be causing more vibration to be transmitted up through the fairing to the brackets?

Just thinking out loud, thanks guys.

I got halfway decent changing those brackets on my older 90s EGs.  Not sure if they've been up graded since then but some guys started reinforcing the ends where they connect at the radio and at the fairing, fitting it in place and grinding away anything that keeps it from making a nice fit then just put it back together and don't worry about it anymore.

That and poor design.

I had the same problem. I put the updated HD brackets in and haven't had a problem since.

I have a '05 Standard I bought new..... no radio / speakers.  Broke them all over time, a couple more than once.

EGlider check out Regen fab works.  Go to you tube look for Regen fab works.  This guy makes his own replacements in stainless steel.  You just add them to you broken brackets.   I got all 4 replacements, 8 nuts and bolts, and a drill bit to do the job.   He shows you how to do it on jos video.    If you Replaced your brackets, you can certainly do the replacements.

If I ever need to replace again I'll probably go with the Alloy Art brackets but so far the updated HD brackets are holding up fine. I'm guessing they've been in for 4-5 years now.

I suffered from the broken fairing brackets again this past season.
These where the third time since 2005 that both have been replaced.
The last ones where do to the accident couple years ago now.
Anyways, went with the Alloy Arts and eventually replaced the dam stereo too.
JPCycles where easy peazey to deal with ...I didnt shop around much as I had time to burn and spent more time than a shop would have doing the swap.
Did 1 side at a time and this was the first time I fixed something and it didnt break...yet???
Overkill in the engineering, but sure beats replacing the Mother HD oem ones again in a few years.

have you checked your motor mounts,, excessive vibration doesn't help..

Did the broken brackets cause excessive head shake, front end oscillation?

Northside

I replace my broken ones, all four of them, in 2010 with the newer Harley ones.  40,000 + miles later not problem.

I didn't notice any, and probably rode at least 3-4k with them broken. Riding to Colorado, and Utah we were pressing 75-85mph all day and I didn't feel any oscillation. The only head shake was the loose fairing. The bike seems to ride smoother now, which is probably the result of not having the fairing bounce up and down over every bump and dip.

Well I probably got 75k out of the original ones, including one "L" bracket repair. But broken all the way through near the radio was unexpected. Hopefully I can get 40k like you did.
