Its time for the winter projects. I have a throttle and cable that were made by S&S. It has two different numbers on it(222,221). probably a mix match swap meet part, worked you years. I changed to a CV40 some time ago and love the carb. Now its time to mend the link. Its been hanging a little. Took it apart and some strands are broke. I made this one up with a solder kit. Solder held but the rest is going bad. It has a real sharp bend around the front cylinder to be threaded into the carb. The sheath is rubbed through to the metal. The free length is real close to 5". The sheath measures 32.5, like i said i made this one up and it worked so good i forgot about it. Anybody here been through this. Thanks dirty

You might be able to get a quality custom cable from Barnett

When I went to a CV carb I installed a 96 and up throttle drive and cable from Drag Specialties through my local indy.

The free length on a stock or S&S carb cable is 4-1/8, and the CV carb cable is 5-1/8. If you're using the original type Shovelhead handlebar controls, which the cable threads into the  housing, you either need to get a custom cable from Barnett, or make one for a CV carb from a stock or S&S cable. I did the latter.

Start with a cable that's longer than you need. At the carb end, cut the ferrule off. Pull the cable back through the jacket a ways, and using a dremel with cut of wheel, cut the jacket at the length you need. Push the cable back through the jacket, and measure 5-1/8". Thne put one of these on it:

I think I'm doing something then. I got a free length of 5 inches and I am shimming the 90 degree elbow with plastic washers to be able to keep the adjuster together. I have a S&S (222,221) throttle. Emailed Barnett and got a reply, got to phone them on custom orders. Pluggin away, thanks Dirty

JW, What is that called and where can you find it. I've made a similar one in the past but always new they were out there just didn't know where

JW any idea how that would work  on a clutch cable?  Strong enough? Clutch cable fit through?

Called "throttle cable repair kit". You can find these in the "Help!" section of almost any generic parts store like Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc.

Oh man, don't think I'd try it. That ferrule is way too small for a clutch cable, and I don't think I'd trust a set screw to hold onto that much tension. That said, I seen articles on youtube where guys do fix clutch cables by making a ferrule out of a slice of brass rod, drill a hole in it, and silver solder it on the cable. Not exactly a road side fix though.

Yea, I've seen a video where a guy shortens a clutch cable...maybe I'll try it on an old one before I shorten a good one.  Got a few beat up cables hanging around.  May as well put them to use.
Thanks JW

I've seen them for clutch cables the set screw goes in from the end not the side and has a brass button to grab the
cable, I've seen some people leave them on. But I would not.

I'm having a bit of trouble with the free length measurement. In order to call Barnett i need to get my measurements right. On their web site i need measurement A and B. http://www.barnettclutches.com/cables.html . I am having to use shims on the elbow (see pic) in order to get the right free length. If i don't use the shims the adjuster is all the way out. With the adjuster all the way in i get 5 inch of free length. The sheath length is 32.5 inches with a 3.5 inch elbow and 5 inches of free length and 5/32 inch of shim on the elbow screws. My throttle is a S&S model 222 with duel cables and have a 5/16-18 and a 1/4-20 threads. I use only one cable, the 5/16-18 side. Pluggin away Thanks Dirty

Well you're not going to like this but hell, I'll admit to tying a knot in a factory cable right near an inch or so from the end to be able to test a new E carb. During all the tweaking and dialing I forgot about it and it ran like that for years.  :embarrassed:

Now you guys are special,  I don't go around telling everyone about stuff like that.  :hyst:

well i guess I'll just tie a knot in it.

dirtymike

Thanks for all the useful info Cali, Dirty

dirtymike

got the cable figured out. Free length is 4-7/8 for CV40 without a Knot with a S&S 222 throttle.
