I've been studying the prospect of a chain drive for my 2001 dyna. I was hoping someone that has an early Dyna and has done the conversion can give me the offset and spacer #'s. With my bike I run a 160 tire. My belt clears it by 1/8". Ideally I want a bit more distance with a chain. With a 3/4 offset front my preliminary measurementsn tell me it I'd still be tight to the tire. Next choice is 1.060" using a PBI. Then there's the rear spacer size which my preliminary measurements say 0.700" with a 1.060 offset front. These measurement are all approximate as I haven't removed the belt and pulleys yet but do have the inner off.

I'm factoring in that a 530 chain will be 1" wide. So am I close? Hopefully Buffalo will chime in as he has done this on his 2001.

Hi dynabagger   Only going by what I used on my 01 Dyna, I'd say tyou would need the 1.060 front sprocket with a .560 spacer for the rear. You could possibly used an offset rear and a thinner spacer too. Make sure the rear sprocket is designed for the larger centre hole on 01 up bikes.
I used a .500 offset PBI front, with a flat rear Drag sprocket to clear a 150 size tire by approx 3/16".
If your using a stock rim, the 160 size will not be quite as wide as it could be, you have to measure the tire width on your rim to determine how much wider it is.
IMO, 3/16" chain clearance is lots for the tire.
I'd be more concerned with inner fender clearance of the tire with a 160. My Avon 150 clears by 5/16" both sides inside the fender, and for that all fender bolts had to be swapped for round headed bolts installed from the inside to out. You could also machine hex heads down to .080 (just deep enough to hold with a wrench) installed from the inside.  Signals had to be installed elsewhere as the stem went way too far inside the fender, especially the wiring.
Hope that helps some.  Buffalo

I just took some more measurements. In order to keep the out board edge of the chain equal to the out board edge of the belt it looks like I need the 1.310 offset. I'm using an old pulley to measure the depth of the contact point where the pulley meets the sprocket spacer then comparing to the PBI chart. Seems strange that you got away with a 0.500 offset? I'll need to get the front pulley off and measure again to be sure I guess.

BTW my wheel is aftermarket 4.250 wide. I've been running it with the belt for a couple of years now. A bit closer on the right. I shaved down the bolt heads to make it work. The reason for going chain is that I worry about breaking the belt and just the cool factor of a color matched chain. :embarrassed:

I'm running the stock rear wheel, its either 3" or 3.5". With your 4.250" wide rim all bets are off that my system would work. Sorry I can't be of more help. Maybe someone would have a set of sprockets you could slide on for setting up, then order the exact pieces you need. Buffalo
