My 69 FLH has a circuit breaker in the positive line running up to the switch.  When I got the bike it was just hanging loose although it's got a bracket that seemingly gets  attached to the bike somewhere. Anyone know where?  Is it really necessary anyway?  I'd love to just take it out if not.

You should have a 30 amp breaker between the switch and battery.  Its insurance that in the event of a short it will trip and save you a lot of trouble from frying other circuits. Your charging system should also be attached to that breaker.  At least thats the way I wire mine.   It should def not be hanging loose.  Unless it was poorly installed and left hanging, I would rerouted it and anchor it to the frame someplace.  Don't eliminate it.  After that 30 amp which protects everything after it you should have a series of 5, 10 & 15 amp fuses to isolate and protect other components. It makes troubleshooting easy if you should get a dead short.  Just my way...good luck.

Thanks .  I'll need to find a place to attach the thing.  The bike had all original wiring that was crusty and patched up. I've replaced the harness with a nice new one with cloth covered wiring in the correct colors.  I like tidy.  I just can't see where that breaker is supposed to be attached. I can make something up but I thought it odd there wasn't someplace obvious

is it original wiring? If so there must be some evidence where it was mounted.  Tidy is good!!  Especially wiring!!

It was originally attached on the back side of the battery box. There should be a small hole at the bottom of the frame the batter sits in towards the front.

Thanks Mike.  I'll be out there looking for it this morning.  Can't wait to take this baby out for a spin.  The last 10% of this rebuild seems to be taking as long as the 90% that's done

In the 23 years I've owned it my shovel has never had that circuit breaker.  Maybe I'll fix that and quit running on luck....  :embarrassed:

On the non-lawnmower battery models the 30A CB hangs off a copper bar right off the positive terminal.

That's the way mine has always been. An AGM battery is a nice upgrade too.

Mine is off the positive battery post just about close enough to the rear rocker box to arc it :wink:ask me how I know how close ? haha

Agree with attached to positive terminal with a copper strip on my "79 FXS

Anyone got a picture of that right-off-the-positive post mounting? As mentioned above it's already tight to the rockerbox in there, just enough room to really heat up my wedding ring.

Been there, done that.

On another note, did you know that if a brand spankin new throttle cable wire flops around during installation and manages to land across the frame and the positive cable it is cut quite cleanly.

Almost all procedures in the manual start with "disconnect battery cables". Hmm, why do I need to do that, I'm just putting on a throttle cable, no risk of danger....
We've all done it, and still do, that is for sure.

Anyone want to guess how that little spot on the rear rocker box got there?

Every day, I'm one day closer...  WTF!  I'm not near 70 yrs. old!

Thanks Snuff. Guess I got some tinkering to do.

I have mine mounted to the side of the seat post.  The stock setup is awful.  Its things like that copper strip that make me wonder what they were thinking of.  Certainly not used on newer bikes for a good reason.  Proper gauge cable and it can be mounted anyplace.
